Malls are built to create an attractive space for people to buy. Ergo, they need to attract people. And nothing attracts footfalls of people into the malls more than knowing that their favourite brand has a store at their nearest mall. Buyers are attracted to brands that connect and engage with them. Brand stores are now becoming an extension of their heritage and brand story.
Besides proper options for entertainment, food and beverages; malls also need to focus on the right mix of anchor tenants i.e. brands that can better engage with the customer – which will help boost footfalls. Anchor tenant refers to brand stores at the malls selected or chosen to attract potential customers to the mall. Traditionally, these type of brand stores occupy the largest space in the mall, but of recent is not limited to the criteria. Brands can opt to choose to build a regular departmental store or launch a concept store at the shopping centre. H&M:
World’s second-largest fashion retailer H&M had crossed Rs 1,100 crore in sales in India last year. And this is their progress chart in just four years since they launched in the Indian market. The brand, also known as Hennes & Mauritz AB is known for fast-fashion catering to men, women, teens and children. H&M currently has 40-plus stores for offline shoppers. Owing to their strong sales performance and popularity, developers are eager to have the brand occupy a space in the mall, even offering them subsidised rentals.

From a single shoppers stop store back in the '90s to 83 stores across 38 cities in India, Shoppers Stop journey to the largest chain of departmental stores in India has been undoubtedly a successful one. The brand attracts family with clothing, accessories, fashion, jewellery, cosmetics, health and beauty products. Not to miss out home furnishing and decor products as well. Shoppers Stop has built a strong connection with its consumers over the years by providing a shopping experience on an international level. Shoppers Stop's loyalty program First Citizen is also one of the reasons for the brand's long-standing following.
Hamley's:
Popular British and now multinational toy brand, Hamley's is one of the oldest and largest in its domain. Now owned by Reliance Retail, the Hamleys outlet first landed on the Indian shores in 2010 and has since enticed customers young and old alike. The brand currently has 100 stores in operation in India, more than half of their 160 global outlets. The brand attracts more than 3 million customers annually.
There are three more brands without which this list cannot be completed. Globus, Max and Metro. The former is hailed as one of the first brands in fashion retail and operates more around 40 stores of which 6 focuses on women and one on accessories. Catering to consumers who want fashion at a mid-price point, it offers products across categories. Max, a Dubai based brand that provides fashion options for the entire family. Max has more than 200 stores across 80 cities and has a strong brand awareness due to its various IPR's in modelling, acting and design space. Lastly, a brand that is as old as the nation itself - Metro. Exclusively dealing in footwear for the entire family, Metro is now a successful chain of exclusive fashion footwear and accessories stores The brand that started with one store in Mumbai now has operational stores at more than 206 prime locations in 100 cities across pan India.
