You may have shortlisted the best colleges based on all the criteria discussed in this series of articles on setting basic criteria when selecting your college. However, it is also important to know whether you fulfill the criteria of the college for getting selected. Each college has its own set of criteria for selecting students; however, there are some common criteria that you need to consider to narrow down your list of colleges further. This article discusses the criteria set by college for a student to get in.

Entrance Exams

Many colleges have entrance exams that you need to not only clear but also get good scores on. The IIT colleges in India, for instance, require everyone to take a common IIT-JEE which happens once every year. The students considered for admission need to have scored above a break-off. So you need to be prepared for these exams before hand. You will need to wait a whole year to re-appear for the exams if you do not clear it the first time around.

There are other colleges that require SAT, TOEFL, GRE, ACT, etc. scores to be considered for entry into college. These can be usually ...
... given at your convenience but requires a lot of preparation.

Check with your top colleges for the average or minimum scores required to get in. However, make sure that you use these as a guideline only, and not as absolute guarantee to get in if you score as much.

High School Grades

The grade or percentage you have scored in your high school is also taken into account. Some colleges take into consideration your performance for the entire final year or last couple of years while some colleges only consider your performance in the last test given. Be sure to check what your top colleges consider to be sure.
