What Does The Best Diamond In India Look Like?
The diamond mines in India
A diamond in India could possibly be the best kind you could get your hands on. India is known for diamond mines such as the Kollur mine in the Golconda region. This one has been famous for producing the largest diamonds. From the 16th century, a diamond in India from this mine could have been rarer than those mined elsewhere.
The Kollur mine was fully functional until the 19th century. When a diamond in India was mined from here, they usually found their place on the crown jewels of the royals. It is said that the largest diamond in India, the Koh-i-Noor was also produced from the Kollur mine.
The most expensive diamond in India
Did you know that the diamond price is mainly determined by its four main attributes? These are also known as the 4Cs, namely the cut, color, clarity, and carat. The most expensive diamond in India would be completely colorless and one without a single inclusion or blemish.
The Jacob Diamond, which weighs 184.75 carats would be a perfect example of such a solitaire in India. It is currently with the Reserve Bank of India in Mumbai and has ...
... been revealed as a part of the Nizam’s jewellery exhibition in 2001, 2007 and most recently in early 2019. It is believed that the uncut diamond may have weighed over 400 carats before it was cut in Europe.
It has only been passed over twice as compared to the Koh-i-Noor whose right to possession has led to a few conflicts in history.
Some notable diamonds mined in India
The Nizam Diamond was mined in the 1800s and is famous because of its carat weight and also its shape. At 340 carats it weighed 68 grams and was shaped like an almond. This diamond in India, found at the Kollur mine was named after its owner, the last Nizam of Hyderabad.
The Hope Diamond is yet another diamond in India which is said to have been originally mined here. It has been in the United States since 1958. Due to trace amounts of boron atoms, it is a rare blue in colour. It has an interesting history on how it was named since the time it was purchased in 1666 by French gem merchant Jean-Baptiste Tavernier.
The Daria-i-Noor, currently in Tehran, Iran is world’s largest pink diamond at 182 carats and 36 grams. It was originally mined in India and changed quite a few hands before finally ending up in Iran. The pale pink color of this diamond is the rarest among diamonds.
