• Is winter suitable for planning the Annapurna Circuit trek?
Before deciding about winter, let's take into account the various suitable time frames to take up Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake on route.
The time between September and October is one of the driest seasons in and around the Himalayan ecosystem. Since monsoon has already passed and winter is on the verge of arriving, this is the time when the sky is at its clearest and the temperature is also an optimal one. Similarly, Spring, which is between March and April also has the similar weather pattern.
Since the time frame for landslides and earthquakes has also passed, it is often regarded as the safest time to take up the trek. However, all these reasons also make it the peak season to trek to Annapurna Base camp via Tilicho Lake. The entire trail is crowded with numerous trekking enthusiasts travelling to the same destination as you. This is also the time when everything costs more. From lodging to fooding, the cost is almost double as it is the peak season.
November to January is when it is snowing heavily and the sky is never clear due to the cloudy weather and chilling wind flow. Visibility is also greatly reduced. This is the time when it is important to only trek if you have a Sherpa guide along as getting lost in the snow is way easier than you think.
However, according to the accounts of many travel enthusiasts, the Himalayas are at their glorious best during winters. And this being off season, the cost of everything is reduced over 50% making it a damn cheap expedition.
