U.S. is one of the major importers of methanol with net imports of 1037 kilo tons in 2017. It majorly imports from Trinidad & Tobago, Venezuela, Equatorial Guinea, Canada and Bahrain. During global economic crisis in the year 2009, the U.S. imports as well as production dropped significantly. The imports witnessed a decline of 62% from 5139 kilo tons in 2008 to 1930 kilotons in 2009; however, it increased in 2010 by 210% to reach 5975 kilo tons overcoming the recessionary period. Since 2011, imports have steadily decreased particularly from Trinidad & Tobago and Venezuela while exports have increased owing to increase in production and new capacities additions. In 2015, Celanese added 1300 kilo tons of capacity while a new plant of 1800 kilo tons by OCI, CEL and Natgasoline will start its production in Q1 2019. This will further decrease the country’s dependence on imports.

Methanol is light, flammable, colorless, volatile and toxic liquid which is considered as simplest of all alcohols. It is essentially produced from natural gas or coal having odor similar to that of ethanol. It is used as a precursor to many ...
... organic chemicals such as formaldehyde, acetic acid, dimethyl ether, biodiesel, dimethyl tertiary butyl ether. The major consumer as of 2017 is Asia-Pacific and new plants are coming up in this region as well. The methanol market is relatively complex and it is affected by several factors such as environmental policies, fuel consumption, biofuel mandates and plastic consumption. Despite the negative effects of these factors, the new developments such as Methanol to Olefins (MTO) and Methanol to Propylene (MTP) have bridged the gap. Globally, formaldehyde is the largest consumer of methanol as it is used in construction industries to produce glues & adhesives, permanent-press fabrics, paper product coatings and certain insulation materials. Other derivatives of methanol include Acetic acid, Dimethyl Ether (DME), Biodiesel, MTBE and others. Major end-use applications of methanol are in automotive, pharmaceuticals, packaging, construction, electronics, and solvents industries.
