It was the home of Dubai's former ruler from 1921 to 1958, Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum. The current ruler, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is his grandson. The former residence of the Al Maktoum family has been rebuilt and opened as a museum. Sheikh Saeed's father had built the original house in the late 19th century with the intention of watching the shipping activities. Located on the northern bank of Dubai Creek is Deira, an area home to the traditional markets or 'souks'. The Gold Souk in Deira is the world's largest gold bazaar. You can get a wide range of spices and herbs, such as paprika, saffron, cumin, thyme, and sumac in the Spice Souk.
