Your choice of perfume should always match your personality. When choosing your next bottle from an online store or when visiting a store in person, remember how the different scent types match up with your character and moods!

Buying perfume is no simple task. Even if you have been gifted a bunch of Calvin Klein One perfume bottles from your aunt for Christmas, this doesn’t mean this is what you should be wearing. The right scent for you should be more like an extension of your personality, much like your choice in fashion.

Similarly to purchasing important pieces of clothing, such as an expensive coat or shoes, your perfume selection needs to take place with the same amount of care and attention. Don’t just buy the most expensive option you can afford, or something that has been handed down from a sibling or friend. The choice you make about your scent must be a reflection of who you are and your unique personality.

For instance, if you have a relatively bold and loud personality, you might find that something that is subtle and understated does not match your character. Similarly, it may be strange ...
... if you have a very powerful musky scent if you are a naturally modest and shy person.

Below, we have outlined some of the basics to help you decide on the right perfume for you. There are five main categories that scents can fall into which include floral, fruity, oriental green and woody.

Woody Perfumes

This scent is perfect for people who love nature and are ‘earthy’. They are generally warm and associated with things like cedar, sandalwood, or patchouli. Sometimes, you might find that a woody perfume is accented with a citrus scent, lending it a kind of full bodied aromatic flavour. They are many perfumes that are woody, and if you’re not sure what these are, visit a perfume store and ask your attendant to show you some that are woody, such as Midnight Oud by Juliette Has A Gun.

Floral Perfumes

Floral scents are often good for people who like a ‘feminine’ smell or who are romantic. It is one of the most traditional scents that people have tried at one time in their lives. You will probably already know if you are a fan of floral scented perfumes, but if you’re not sure, there are thousands of options available today from top designer brands. Simply visit a store or read the online description of a scent and you will be able to find a number of floral scented perfume options.

Oriental Perfumes

Oriental fragrances have been growing rapidly in popularity. People who like this type of smell in their fragrance often like to stand out, or are in touch with their sensuality. Ingredients used for oriental aftershaves or perfumes include cinnamon, vanilla, flower extracts and other spices.

Fruity Perfumes

Fruity perfumes are still one of the most popular scent types. Whether they are citrus or spicy, people often go for this type if they are energetic or lively. Often, it is the first choice for young girls who are new to the world of perfumes, but it doesn’t mean that this scent doesn’t suit women (and women) of older ages too. If you are a fan of apples, raspberries or oranges, you may like a fruity perfume to match your tastes.

Green Perfumes

Green is a little harder to describe as a scent, but if you can imagine the smell of fresh foliage or cut grass, you can start to picture what this scent type includes. You may encounter ingredients such as violet leaves, plant extracts or rhubarb, which give you a strong sense of nature and being outdoors.

Always consider your character and personality when choosing a perfume. You may love the smell of Calvin Klein One or a certain scent on someone else, but if it does not match who you are as a person, then there is no point purchasing the same bottle for yourself.
