How To Treat Acidity With Herbal Medicines?
Acidity is a very common problem affecting many Indians. It is also called as acid reflux and is characterized by heartburn is which felt around the lower chest area, caused by the acid present in the stomach flowing back towards the food pipe. Unhealthy eating habits and poor lifestyle causes this condition. The food we eat passes down into the oesophagus and then to stomach. The gastric glands present in the stomach secretes acid which is necessary to digest the food we eat and helps in killing germs. Acidity occurs when the gastric gland produces large amount of acid more than the amount we required for digestion process. This condition is characterized by burning sensation just above the stomach. Acidity is very common in Indians due to heavy consumption of oily and spicy foods.

Causes of acidity are unhealthy eating habits like Overeating, Skipping meals, or Eating just before sleep, excess tea/coffee, oily and spicy food consumption like samosa, burger, pizza etc, side effects of some medicines like NSAIDs, medicine of high blood pressure, stress or lack of sleep, excess smoking, infection by a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, stomach disorders such as tumors, gastroesophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcers.
Symptoms of acid reflux are burning sensation in stomach, burning sensation in throat and heart, restlessness, belching, nausea, vomiting, pain in abdomen, chest pain, headache, fatigue, tiredness, thirst, difficulty in swallowing, prolonged sour taste in mouth, foul smell in breath, indigestion, constipation, regurgitation, ulcers in mouth and throat, Abdominal bloating, feeling of fullness, persistent dry cough, black stool, unexpected weight loss etc.
In Ayurveda Acidity is correlated with Amlapitta. Amlapitta is a commonest digestive disorder. In Ayurveda it is said to be caused because of imbalance of Agni which leads to impairement of digestion and leading to disease and also increase in amla guna of Pitta dosha.
Ayurvedic Treatment For Acidity
Ayurveda has variety of herbs in nature which helps to reduce all the signs & symptoms of acidity. Acidity is correlated with 'Amlapitta' in Ayurveda. The Aggravation of mainly pitta dosha is there as compared to others. Ayurvedic medicines work on the root cause of disease and thus balances the excess pitta dosha in the body. Chandigarh Ayurved Centre introduces a complete pack known as 'Acidity Care Kit' for the herbal treatment of Acidity without any side-effects in the body. This herbal kit comprises of four products in it that contain various herbs which creates cooling & calming effect in the body. 1. Digestion Care Sachet: These herbal sachets are prepared from various herbal ingredients that shows calming and cooling effect on the stomach.
- Parval pishti: This pishti helps in reduction of burning sensation, pain in chest, headache, etc related to acidity.
- Sutshekhar ras: It helps in pacifying pitta dosha in the body. Sutshekhar ras treats heartburn, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, etc.
- Shukta pishti: This pishti remove all toxins out from the body due to its antioxidant property.
- Shankh bhasma: The problems symptoms of acidity such as abdominal pain, loss of appetite, indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, chest pain, etc are treated with this bhasma.
- Shwet parpati: chest pain, acid reflux, constipation, indigestion, etc are relieved with this parpati.
- Kamdudha ras: This ras helps in reduction of excess pitta dosha, heartburn, excessive heat, burning sensation, abdominal pain etc.
- Giloy satv: It reduces the acidity by pacifying the pitta dosha in the body.
Recommended Dosage: Take one sachet with normal water twice daily.
2. Amlapitta Mishran: As in ayurveda acidity is correlated with Amlapitta so for relieving the symptoms related to it Amlapitta mishran is an ayurvedic preparation. This herbal syrup contains herbs like Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Vasa ( Justicia Adhatoda), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Patol (Trichosanthes dioica), etc. These herbs balance excess pitta dosha and the symptoms related to acidity.
Recommended Dosage: Take two teaspoonful twice daily.
3. Agnimukha Churna: As the name suggests it relieves you from excess agni (Pitta dosha) in the body. This ayurvedic churna contains ingredients like Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Pippali (Piper longum), Sonth (Zingiber officinale), etc. Also provides relief from problems like abdominal bloating, flatulence, belching, abdominal pain, indigestion, loss of appetite, constipation, etc.
Recommended Dosage: Take half teaspoon of this churna with normal water twice daily.
4. Pittashekhar Rasa: these tablet contains ingredients like Bilva majja, Kapardika bhasma, Sootshekhar rasa, Shankh bhasma, etc that reduces acidity naturally. These tablets balances pitta dosha in the body, improves digestion, reduces pain in abdomen, chest pain, heartburn, abdominal bloating, etc.
Recommended Dosage: Take one tablet with normal water twice daily.
