Who does not love rain? Probably a very few! Most people genuinely wait for it to rain at the time when they leave for their homes from office. This makes it easy for them to get completely drenched in rain. The hot cup of a curcumin tea and pakodas or fritters fried in less amount of healthy oil make a refreshing combination for enjoying a rainy day. While rainy season is fun for many; it brings a lot of troubles to others. It makes the railway department cancel many trains and makes them change the routes of quite a few trains. Heavy clouds and rains can also lead to cancellation of flights.

Cold and Flu:

The weather change can leave you sick with cold and flu. During the rainy season, on some days there is lot of rain and other days may see the sunshine. This creates fluctuations in temperature which further creates an ideal environment for disease-causing pathogens to flourish. The immune system also weakens during the rainy season and therefore you can easily suffer from cough, cold and fever. Your body is more vulnerable to infections in rainy season.

Viral Fever:

Fever due to virus can last ...
... from two days to two weeks. Viral fever occurs due to presence of viral infections characterized by a spike in normal temperature. It is extremely common in children and elderly people because of their weaker immunity. It gets communicated from one person to another by direct contact with infected person’s bodily fluids. When an infected person yawns, sneezes or even talks; they circulate small infected particles of fluids. After the contact with virus; it may take about 16 to 48 hours for a full-blown infection to develop.

Diarrhoea:

Seasonal diarrhoea is common by the end of the summer and beginning of rainy season. During rainy season, the contamination of water increases in the areas where water treatment does not occur properly. E.g. if you have a washroom or a toilet in your place but your neighbour does not have; your family will still be exposed to faecal contamination of water. An improperly built latrine might end up as a point source of accumulation of faecal material in a community in heavy rainfall.

Dengue:

Dengue is also known by the name of monsoon fever in India and its vector is mosquito. It is caused by four different types of virus DENV1, DENV2, DENV3, DENV4 and is spread by Aedes mosquito. The dengue mosquito Even a single mosquito bite can lead to dengue. It is a severe flu-like illness beginning with a sudden onset of fever and painful headache. Skin rash, muscle and joint pain, nausea and vomiting can also accompany dengue. In extreme cases bleeding can occur in dengue or dengue haemorrhagic fever and can also lead to death.

Malaria:

Malaria is another mosquito-borne disease and is very common in monsoon. Female Anopheles mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting malaria-causing parasite called Plasmodium. Breeding of mosquitoes in water-logged areas is common in rainy season. The attack of malaria usually begins with shivering and chills which is followed by high fever, followed by sweating and a return to normal temperature. The signs and symptoms of malaria typically begin within a few weeks after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

Chikungunya:

Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes. Symptoms usually appear within a week of infection. Fever and joint pain come on suddenly. The other symptoms include muscle pain, headache, fatigue and rash. The chikungunya virus transmits from person to person when they are bitten by a carrier Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito. The joint pains due to chikungunya may persist for months to years even after recovering from preliminary infection of chikungunya.

Typhoid:

When one consumes contaminated water and food, it can lead to typhoid. Poor hygiene and sanitation is the main cause of contamination. The hygiene status decreases further in rainy season. Typhoid is caused by bacteria Salmonella typhi. The common symptoms of typhoid include fever, headache and sore throat. Other symptoms of typhoid include stomach pain, vomiting, weakness, and loose stools. Clinical severity of many cases can vary and serious complications or even death can occur.
