The government agencies have to review, quantify and regulate physical agents, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals to protect and boost the environment and public health. One of the major regulatory responsibilities for these government bodies is to assess the toxicological risk to human health. We have shared a complete overview of the toxicology risk assessment in this content.

Human health risk assessment refers to the process of evaluating information to decide if an environmental hazard will affect people or not. To make the risk assessment process more efficient, many disciplines of toxicology are integrated into it. It includes both qualitative and quantitative components and four general steps. These steps are – hazard identification toxicology, exposure assessment, dose-response assessment, and risk characterization.

Let’s learn about the steps –

•Step 1

Hazard Identification:

Hazard identification toxicology is the process of recognizing the contaminants presumed to pose ...
... health hazards, quantifying the concentrations existing in the environment, elaborating the specific forms of toxicity that the contaminants of concern might cause and examining the condition of toxicity that can be expressed in exposed humans.

•Step 2

Exposure Assessment:

This process involves determining the population, exposed to the agent of concern, finding out the routes through which exposure might occur and estimating the duration, magnitude, and timing of the doses that people get as a result of their exposure.

•Step 3

Dose-Response Assessment:

Dose-response assessment is the process of further examining the conditions under which the chemical's toxic properties are manifested in exposed people by highlighting relationships between toxic response and dose. The development of these relations includes the use of mathematical models. This step can also involve an assessment of differences in response.

• Step 4

Risk Characterization:

This step includes the integration of information from the first steps to prepare a qualitative or quantitative estimate of the likelihood. It estimates any of the hazards that are related to the agent of concern will occur in the exposed people. In this step, toxicology risk assessment results are revealed.

In the risk assessment process, the role of toxicogenomic information is undeniable. For instance, in hazard identification toxicology process, toxicogenomic data show what type of hazard a chemical presents, and its modes and mechanism of toxic action. Toxicogenomic data can also be used to clarify the areas of uncertainty, including extrapolation of data from one species to another, variability in the human population and identification of susceptible subpopulation.
