Picking the right flooring for your home is a bigger decision than you might realise. As well the cost of the materials and the labour, the time spent on installation can be considerable. In addition to this, getting the right effect to match the style of your home décor is important for creating a comfortable living space.

You will also need to consider how the floor works in real life situations, with maintenance and cleaning factored in. Because of all this, it’s easy to see why a great deal of money is spent on hiring the right contractors and interior design experts to get the job done right the first time, including the handling of floor preparation services and the installation of the actual floor materials itself.

Never forget about functionality

Before you settle on any flooring decisions, consider how and where the floor will be used. For instance, are you going to use one consistent material across the whole level of your house, or will it be combined with other materials. Also, will the floor be used daily by large volumes of people, or just by a select few family members. All these factors ...
... should affect the type of floor option you choose.

Different floor materials will be more suited to different environments and requirements. Luckily, there are plenty of options to choose from and new technology has made flooring options more versatile and affordable. One of the most popular options today is vinyl, which is made from synthetic polymers and added pigmentation for colour. This material is easy to clean and highly water-resistant. It’s also relatively affordable and a good option for areas that get a lot of usage, such as kitchens and laundry rooms.

Another popular choice of material is tile. Used for centuries, tile is made from ceramic or porcelain, which is very water resistant and easy to clean. It’s often used in similar places to vinyl, such as kitchens and bathrooms that are frequently used spaces and therefore require frequent cleaning.

Wood is still a much desired flooring option despite the generally higher cost for certain wood types and materials. However, you can also choose engineered or composite wood options which are a processed version of wood flooring made by compressing several layers of plywood and putting a thin layer of hardwood over top. This flooring option can be installed over any type of subfloor as long as it is moisture-free.

Finally, while carpet is often seen as the most basic flooring option, made from polyester, nylon or polypropylene, carpet is one of the cheapest and toughest options you can find and offers an added level of comfort for certain settings. This floor type is most commonly used in living areas and bedrooms.

Keep maintenance in mind

Floors need to be cleaned. It’s worth being realistic about who will be in charge of this maintenance and how long it will take to perform. If you are looking for something that doesn’t take much effort to clean, then you might want to opt for flooring options that can be easily wiped and polished. Also, certain materials will need to be treated in a certain way so that they last longer and make your investment worth it.

What’s your budget?

As always, you need to take into account the cost of your flooring material as well as floor preparation services and installation costs. While each product is different, and each supplier will have their own rates, there are some typical price categories that might help you understand which flooring option is right for you.

Vinyl flooring is generally your most affordable option as it can be bought cheaply in large sheets, which are then cut to the shape of the room. Tile designs are much more expensive, especially if you are choosing bespoke or highly specialised designs. When it comes to installation, the process is harder and requires an expert to handle the cutting and fitting of each tile.
