How Do You Get Ready For The Harsh Winter?
Is the winter in your place harsh and what do you often do before each cold winter to well pass this hard time of year?
I would like to present some ways of the home improvement that might help to cope with this season
- Make sure your heat will work well. After a long summer, or even winter and autumn, the heat is not operated. It might have some problems. So the first thing to do is to check it out. You can do this by altering the furnace filter as the winter comes and then every three months. In addition, a programmable thermostat might work better and save you a lot. You can program it to be cooler at night or as you are not at home.
- Check the fireplace and chimney to make sure they are cleaned up and clutter-free. It is necessary to keep the warm air of the home from escaping out the chimney.
- Keep your pipes safe. Since water expands as it freezes, frozen water inside your pipes can make the pipes crack and burst. If you don’t want your pipes to get damaged and become junk after a cold winter, consider some tips like taking water out of outdoor faucets and sprinkler systems to prevent the pipes ...
... from freezing, and cover outdoor faucets with foam insulators. Also, you should disconnect and keep aside outdoor hoses.
- Avoid Ice Dams: this case takes place as heat escapes through the roof and melts snow there. The melting snow flows to the roof’s edge and freezes again there, preventing later melts drain properly. This causes water damage to your home. You can prevent this by cleaning clogged gutters and downspouts which are the main cause of ice dams; the places such as vent pipes, exhaust fans, and chimneys allow warm air to leak from your home. Also, clean soffit vents along the eaves of the house to help the airflow into the attic.
- Seal the gaps of windows and doors. The warm air could escape through the gaps and be replaced by freezing one outdoors, so you should caulk around windows and have weather stripping around doors, which can save you a lot. Consider upgrading the windows and doors to double or even triple-pane to keep the warm air and increase the energy efficiency of your home.
