Who does not want to reach the Everest Base Camp at least once in their lifetime?
We all do, right?
Until a few decades ago, reaching Everest base camp was for the professional mountaineers. However, since the advent of modern technology and some world-class travel enthusiasts, things began to change, and each year more and more crowds are choosing
Everest Base Camp Trek.
However, according to many travel stories, it often believed that taking the Gokyo Ri route to reach EBC is often a much more beautiful experience than the regular convention trek route from Lukla. Gokyo Ri route is, in fact, a lesser-travelled path due to the greater distance and longer trek duration.
Are you wondering why Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Ri Trek?
Let us give you some reasons -
1. The stunningly beautiful Gokyo Ri Lake may be one of the reason, but there are four more Alpine Lakes on this route that are each a better sight than the one before.
2. The Kala Patthar and Gokyo Ri viewpoint is the perfect location for some of the ...
... best and iconic award-winning panoramic view.
3. Gokyo Ri Lake sits at the base of one of the Eight Thousanders of the Himalayas, Mt Cho Oyu. The sight once again is not worth missing at all.
4. AT a massive height of 17,500 ft Gokyo Ri offers four major eight-thousanders of the only 14 around the world. It is said the view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu is unbeatable best at Gokyo Ri.
5. Another reason to trek to the EBC through Gokyo Ri is the presence of Ngozumpa glacier on route Everest Base Camp. It is the longest glacier of the Himalayas and only visible if this route is taken.
6. The Tengboche Monastery is also another beautiful spot that is on route EBC via Gokyo Lake.
Reaching a maximum altitude of 18,000 ft, this 18-day long trek is not for the faint-hearted. With a problematic level gradient, this trek covers a massive distance of 130 km to and fro Kathmandu via Lukla.
The winter temperature in and around the Himalayas can be a bone-freezing situation as temperature varies between -1°C to -27°C during this time. Though the morning hour temperature can increase to 4 to 8 degrees Celsius, the nights are always below freezing point.
However, the spectacular snow-laden sight is breathtaking and at its best during this time. If you are wondering if EBC Trek is doable during this time, then you are not wrong. But a few adjustments can easily make this tour feasible.
1. Taking an excellent guide along is mandatory because the harsh weather and the chilling wind can make visibility a difficult task. Getting lost is very easy unless you have a Sherpa together to guide you along the way.
2. As winter is often considered as the trekking period for only the daredevils and gutsy ones, it is regarded as an offseason. So, the cost of the entire trek is also significantly reduced.
3. Ample layering of clothing instead of a single thick jacket works wonder during this harsh weather. The reason being that air trapped between layers maximizes the insulation and thus keeps you warmer. This will help you battle the severe sub-zero temperature well.
4. Protein and hydration are the saviors during any harsh situation. Carrying sufficient protein bars and water will keep you energized and hydrated, thus preventing any form of illness.
These four reasons can be the forerunner as to why you can take the EBC trek with Gokyo Ri Trek on the route during winter. Once all the major concerns are handled, the climb becomes easier, whatever the time of the year.
