Mountain flight
The 1 hour ‘Everest sightseeing flight’ from Kathmandu, Nepal is the best way to see Mt Everest and 4 other eight thousand meter peaks of the Himalayas. There are several flights every morning which takes tourists in the window seats and hovers close to the snow peaks. The air hostess points at the peaks and passengers are allowed have view of Mt Everest from cockpit. The mountain flight is time saving and more comfortable way of seeing the Mt Everest while you are in Nepal.
Everest base camp trek
The other most popular way of seeing Mt Everest and the UNESCO heritage site, Everest national park is by a two weeks ...
... trekking. Everest base camp trek is the most popular trek in Nepal. Each year, about 40,000 people trek to Everest base camp on Nepal side.
The trek starts and ends in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. There are teahouses along the trail all the way to base camp. The trek starts with exciting flight to Lukla at 2,800 m and then follows the Koshi River valley to the Khumbu icefall. The maximum altitude reached is Everest base camp at 5,364 m. While this 14 days trek is more challenging with basic accommodations, shorter version of trek is possible with relatively easy walks and deluxe accommodations. A short cultural trek to Namche or Tengboche monastery will give good perspective of Everest national park, Sherpa lifestyle and culture.
Helicopter tour of Everest base camp
People with limited time and willingness to trek can also fly to the base camp by helicopter from Kathmandu Nepal. While most of the couples and families with kids, take private helicopter to the base camp, individuals can join a group joining flight. In a round trip flight from Kathmandu and back, the helicopter flies to Lukla airport and then to Everest base camp. It then encircles the base camp providing up-close view of Knumbu ice fall, the base camp, Mt Everest and other surrounding peaks. It is also popular to stop at Everest view hotel for breakfast with Mt Everest in the background.
Driving tour of Everest north base camp
The northern base camp of Mt Everest is in Tibet. Being the plateau, it is easy to drive to Everest base camp from the Tibet side. The base camp on Tibetan side is only 5,157 m. There are no accommodations at the base camp though. Tourists spend a night at Rongbuk monastery, some 8 km south of the base camp and trek or drive the next day.
8 days Tibet tour with detour of Everest base camp is quite popular among the tourists. The tour starts and ends in Lhasa and includes the visit of major sightseeing places in central Tibet.
