Maybe you enjoy the thrill of seeing an old car or truck run again, maybe salvaging broken down cars and trucks is your bread and butter, or maybe you are just looking for an inexpensive vehicle that can be cheaply brought back to life. Whatever the reason you undertake the endeavor, rebuilding a car or truck can be a highly rewarding experience, and sometimes even profitable.

The Car or Truck
If you are looking for fun or profit, you don’t want to select a car or truck that has already been worked on too much. Try online auction sites which feature a varied selection of different vehicles in all different conditions and at all levels of price. Look for a decent car or truck in moderately fair condition which isn’t missing the majority of its hardware (i.e.: dash components, door handles); also, look for a vehicle with most of its glass intact. If you are looking for less of a time investment, go for a car or truck which needs a minimum of body work. At the very least, run an online vehicle history check to make sure that nothing has happened to the car or truck that will make it ...
... especially difficult to repair, such as extensive weather damage. If the vehicle has been brush painted, it’s a red flag; sometimes an unscrupulous seller will brush paint “for storage reasons” when they actually mean to hide poor body work or a lot of dents. Look over the vehicle in person, if possible. Most reputable online auction sites will give you information about the physical location of the vehicle so you or your mechanic can go look it over before committing to making a bid. It’s easy to still buy your car or truck locally while utilizing the convenient features of major online auction sites.

Your Money and Your Time
Calculate the cost of individual parts if you will be doing the work yourself; also factor in the cost of labor if you will be hiring someone to complete the work for you. Add together the initial cost of the vehicle, the cost of parts (or parts and labor), and the approximate amount of time you think you’d spend on the vehicle if you will be working on it yourself. If you are unsure how much some repairs or parts may cost, rebuild cost estimate calculators are available on the net to help you get an accurate picture. Decide whether it is a smart financial and time investment before you place any bids or make any purchases. The conventional belief is that if the rebuilding process takes too much time, or the car or truck isn’t already able to run (albeit poorly) before the project is begun or shortly into the project, that the project will never be completed. The last thing anyone needs is a several thousand dollar paperweight, so do your homework first and try to avoid overwhelming yourself with a project for which you are under experienced.
