Ringing in the ears is a very common problem. It may be caused by exposure to loud noises in the work environment or listening to loud music on a regular basis. You might also be hearing the sounds of tinnitus.

Tinnitus is not actually a disease, but a term used to describe a symptom. It is the perception of a sound in the ear, when there is no external source of the sound. There could be underlying medical causes.

An ear infection should be ruled out, although an infection would usually be accompanied by pain. A buildup of earwax can become impacted or "stuck" on the eardrum. Sometimes, that can be resolved in the home, with an earwax removal kit. In a few cases, it requires medical attention.

If ringing in the ears is accompanied by dizziness, a doctor might make a diagnosis of Meniere's disease. The exact cause of Meniere's is unknown, but it is thought to be related to excess fluid or wax production.

Heavy metal poisoning can cause the symptom. It may be necessary to check the environment for lead or mercury.

The most common cause of mercury poisoning in modern times is ...
... the consumption of fish or seafood that has been contaminated with it. The possible sources of lead exposure are numerous.

Prescription and over-the-counter drugs can cause the sounds of tinnitus. Aspirin, ibuprofen and other pain-relieving drugs could be the cause. Antibiotics and antidepressants are other tinnitus-causing drugs.

Depression, anxiety, circulatory problems, high cholesterol or blood triglycerides, thyroid disorders and neurological problems may cause the symptom. It can also be the result of a head or neck injury, such as whiplash.

The sounds of tinnitus sometimes lead to depression, fatigue and frustration, primarily because they interfere with a person's ability to fall asleep. If you have trouble sleeping, the first step is to take measures to address that problem.

Running a fan in the bedroom, playing soft music or using a white noise machine can help block out the sound and let you get some rest. Leaving the TV on is a bad idea. The light affects the normal production of melatonin.

Melatonin supplements are available over the counter and are often recommended for ringing in the ears, especially when sleep difficulties are also present. Melatonin is a natural sleep aid.

Nutritional deficiencies can cause the sounds of tinnitus. For example, a lack of vitamin B 12 or iron could be the problem.

Even when there are no outright deficiencies, researchers have found that vitamin therapy helps. Citrus bioflavonoids and other antioxidants have been used in some studies.

There are other causes and treatments for ringing in the ears. It may take a little time, but you should be able to find one that works for you.
