Ringing in the ear is one of the primary symptoms for tinnitus, a common condition affecting about a fifth of the 55-65 year old population. It may be temporary or chronic.
Although it is sometimes a symptom of an underlying health problem, no cause can be identified in many cases. Even when no cause is found, it can be treated effectively.

The sounds of tinnitus may be present in one or both ears. Patients describe the noise in different ways. Rings, whines or buzzes are among the most common descriptions. Some say that it sounds like hissing, humming, screaming or whistling. A few people describe a ticking or clicking noise reminiscent of frogs or locusts.

In rare instances, steady tones are heard. They are very similar to the tones used in hearing tests. Because of that, it can appear that there is a hearing loss when a test is given.

The noise can be loud enough to interfere with hearing and day to day activities. But, usually it is bothersome only at night or in a quiet room.

An interesting study conducted in 1953 revealed that most people hear phantom noises ...
... in very quiet rooms. 100 tinnitus-free university students participated in the study. 93% said that they heard a buzzing, pulsing or whistling sound while inside a sound-free anechoic chamber.

This indicates that ringing in the ear is very common. It is only when it interferes with sleep or causes irritability that it needs to be treated. Insomnia, daytime fatigue and clinical depression are sometimes symptoms for tinnitus, when the noise interrupts normal sleep patterns.

Before assuming that the sound is in your head, you might want to rule out the possibility that you are hearing a real sound. The electromagnetic fields created by the wiring in your home could be the cause, especially if what you are hearing seems to be a high-pitched sound.

If you find that it is not the wiring in your house, don't be discouraged. There are safe and effective treatments for the symptoms for tinnitus. Here's a look at some of them.

Ringing in the ear can be caused by a buildup of earwax. There are several earwax removal systems on the market, including the ear wick candles. The candles are not effective for everyone, but they do work for some people.

Nutritional therapy and dietary changes have proven to be effective in clinical trials concerning the symptoms for tinnitus. Zinc, melatonin and antioxidants are among the beneficial nutritional supplements.

The dietary changes that may be necessary include avoiding caffeine, salt and possibly alcohol. Lifestyle factors that can worsen the condition include spending time in noisy environments and smoking cigarettes.

White noise machines can help when ringing in the ear interferes with sleep. You might also try listening to soft music. That often helps.
