Understanding Mini Split System Air Conditioning
If you are looking to install or retrofit a centralized air conditioning system in your commercial space you’re looking at a lot of work at a large cost. You may be faced with the unenviable task of installing an entire duct system in your building. Through-the-wall air conditioning is a less expensive option but it requires a lot of work and maintenance as well. Split system air conditioning may be your best option because it combines the best of both.Split system air conditioning also known as ductless air conditioning is easier to install, more flexible and often more energy efficient than traditional air conditioning. Mini split system air conditioning can be an especially good solution for buildings without an existing duct system.
What is Split System Air Conditioning?
Split system air conditioning has two major components. One is an outdoor condenser/compressor and the other is an indoor air handler. The two components are connected by a conduit, which contains the refrigerant coolant and power cord. The conduit is also where the condensation drains. It’s ductless air conditioning ...
... because the conduit replaces a duct system. The outdoor compressor can be placed on the roof or on just about any exterior wall of your building. Mini split air conditioning manufacturers can provide conduits of any specific length you need. You can strategically install the outdoor compressor of the mini split air conditioning far from the indoor handling units. This allows ductless air conditioners to be placed where the noise from the compressor won’t bother occupants. Compared to window air conditioners, ductless air conditioners are simpler to install. Ductless air conditioning needs a far smaller hole than traditional wall through units. Ductless air conditioners only need about a three-inch wide hole for the conduit to connect the outdoor compressor to the indoor handler. The conduit can connect several indoor units to the outdoor compressor. The indoor air-handling units can be placed in different zones, which can be programmed individually to meet the needs of each zone. The indoor units are attractively designed to complement the interiors of your building. Indoor ductless air conditioners can be wall or ceiling mounted and operated by remote control.
Ductless Air Conditioningâ€Talking the Talk
Before meeting with a mini split system air conditioning specialist it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with some of the terminology:
* British Thermal Units (BTUs) †A measure of heating or cooling capacity.
* Capacity †The ability of the ductless air conditioner to cool a given amount of space.
* Compressor †The motor that pumps refrigerant through the split system air conditioning unit.
* Condenser Coil †Part of the outdoor component that releases heat from the outside air.
* Evaporator Coil †Part of the indoor unit that cools and dehumidifies the air.
* Refrigerantâ€A chemical that cools air as it evaporates.
* Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) â€A measure of the ductless air conditioners cooling efficiency. The higher the number the more efficient the unit is.
