Marble Threshold Installation
Traditionally, metal or wooden strips are used to separate different flooring materials from one room to another. Thresholds are used to make a smoother transition from carpet to wood or carpet to tile. Most thresholds are ½ inch high with beveling on both edges to allow safe passage through a doorway.
Many people are now finding they can improve the look of their homes by replacing current threshold material to one made with marble. Originally marble thresholds dividing rooms were only used on expensive ceramic and marble tile floors. The look is richer than with other material. Even though the purpose of installing a threshold is to provide safe footing between rooms, it also can create a nice, aesthetically pleasing transition between different flooring materials. For the best effect, designers suggest choosing a threshold that blends with one or both of the materials in each room.
This marble material was not commonly found at flooring material stores in the past. Contractors had easier access to this finding this material than did the individual person looking in the home improvement stores did. Today ...
... marble door threshold material is readily available for the do-it-yourselfers. Marble door thresholds are 2 , 4 inches wide or wider, 1/2 or ¾ inches thick and sold in 30 or 36 foot lengths. For an odd-size doorway you can have one custom cut.
A variety of colors are available from white to grey, black, cream and solid. Marble can be added to enhance a contemporary to traditional look Marble will often bring in an Italian or old Roman look to a room.
You will also need a trowel, a utility knife and a straight edge. If the threshold does not fit the opening, you will need a tile cutter. Tile cutters are available to rent, so you can custom cut the threshold to fit.
A great idea for a marble threshold is to use it for a shelf. It is just the right size. You will need a level, two metal shelf brackets, mounting hardware, four clear rubber shelf grippers and a marble threshold. Use a level to position two brackets on the wall. Then screw brackets into the wall, using the appropriate anchors for the wall material. To secure the marble shelf in place, affix two self-adhesive shelf grippers on top of each of the brackets.
