Radiation oncology focuses on cancer treatments by means of ionized radiations.


CPT codes changes every year constantly, so an oncology coder must keep pace with the changes in oncology coding. Here are some of the changes in CPT 2010 in oncology coding.


 CPT 2010 added cancer marker code 86305(Human epididymis protein 4 [HE4]). HE4 has been shown to be prominent in a great fraction of women with epithelial ovarian carcinomas.


 There is also a new transplant management immune function marker code: 86352 (Cellular function assay involving stimulation [e.g., mitogen or antigen] and detection of biomarker [e.g., ATP]). Code 86352 describes a test that assesses cellular immune status as a measurement of cell-mediated immunity (CMI) in whole blood and aids in management of cancers, HIV, as well as autoimmune disorders.


 CPT 2010 also adds a new lab code for a test that can help in anemia and transfusion management: 88738 (Hemoglobin [Hgb], quantitative, ...
... transcutaneous). Remember that transcutaneous means through unbroken skin.


 Introduction of a new code in CPT 2010 is 31626(Bronchoscopy, rigid or flexible, including fluoroscopic guidance, when performed; with placement of fiducial markers, single or multiple). Code 31626 is appropriate when physicians place fiducial markers used to guide a thoracoscopy or to help visualize a more precise lung wedge biopsy. Note: It is for one or more markers.
