Copenhagen Travel Guide
Lying partly on the island of Zealand, partly on the island of Amager and on a number of natural and artificial islets between the two, sits Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark. This city offers something for everyone, whether they''re looking for culture or excitement, and provides an original and exciting holiday destination for all.
Travel: The best way to get to Copenhagen is by plane: most major airports have flights running there and the city centre lies just fourteen minutes away from the biggest airport in Scandinavia. The city itself is well equipped for cyclists because around 35% of the population cycle to work, meaning cycling provides a cheap and easy way to travel around if you don''t fancy walking or using public transport.
Hotels: If you''re looking for luxurious accommodation then somewhere like the centrally located 5 star Hotel D Angelterre might be for you ? it offers elegance and exquisite food with a price tag to match. If your working on a slightly tighter budget somewhere like Ansgar Hotel may be a better option; alternatively there are numerous hostels scattered through the city.
Food: ...
... The local cuisine may take those who aren''t used to delights like pickled herring or fish dumplings a little by surprise but it''s well worth a try if only to experience some of the local culture. For the less adventurous restaurants like Kommandanten offer a delicious mix of Danish and French food so you can find something to suit everyone''s taste.
Night-life: For clubbers places like Pan or Cafe Rust offer the usual bright lights, bounding beats and party atmospheres, though it is worth noticing that most clubs don''t really kick off until well after midnight. There are also several excellent Jazz bars dotted throughout the city, serving up a mix of fantastic music and a relaxed ambience. Alternatively, there is always just settling down for a pint of Carlsberg at one of the pubs dotted throughout the city.
Culture: Though a fire ravaged most of the city during the eighteenth century there are still a number of examples of beautiful architecture still surviving. A particularly impressive example is the royal Amalienborg Palace, an art deco masterpiece standing near the centre of the city. The art museum Ny Carlsberg Glypotek has an impressive range of exhibits taking in French, Greek, Roman and Etruscan art and is also well worth a look.
What to do: The family-owned Carlsberg brewery is a surprisingly interesting place to visit, all with the prospect of an ice-cold beer to revive you at the end. Tivoli gardens is also a fantastic option: enjoy the beautiful landscape during the day and the carnivals and shows during the night.
Copenhagen is a city almost unrivalled in terms of its beauty, excitement and in the vast amount of things to do there. Whatever you are looking for in a holiday destination Copenhagen has something for you.
