Truly Create My Own Website By Discovering The Best Niche Pt 1: Why Choose A Specific Niche?

One of the first things I had to do after deciding to create my own website and go into business for myself was determine a very specific niche to focus on.
There were many different interests that I thought would make interesting businesses, but I knew that in order to be successful I would need to be very focused when it came to selecting a niche.
Why is this? What's wrong with a broad, more generalized niche? What's wrong with tackling multiple niches with one website?
Design & Content
When I create my own website, it is much easier to select an appealing design and determine what type of content to feature if my niche is very specific.
I know who my targeted audience is and that makes it so much easier to design a site that is going to appeal to those people.
Also, I know exactly what type of information that market may be looking for and can target all of my content to fill that need.
Even the tone of my content may change depending on the target market for a specific niche.
If I am marketing to anyone and everyone with several niches on one site or no specified ...
... niche at all, the site will not be very appealing to anyone!
Remember: if you are marketing to everyone, no one is going to find it useful!
Defining Yourself
When I create my own website I of course know what my business is all about, who I am, and what I am trying to do with the business.
The problem is no one else knows these things.
Others who find my website have to know from the very first page what I am all about.
This comes down to a tightly focused niche because a website scattered with a wide variety of information that falls within different niches will be confusing to others.
When you target one specific niche per website, then everyone who finds the site will know right away what the site is about.
That will determine whether they want to look around some or click off to find something else.
If they can't figure out what the website is about, they are just going to click away in most cases.
Marketing Strategies
How do you effectively market a site that is about ten different things? It would take a lot of time and a huge list of keywords, right?
This is another major reason to select a specific niche for your website.
It will be much easier and a lot more cost effective to determine your list of related keywords and start marketing.
In turn, your marketing will be a lot more effective as you drive targeted traffic to the site and convert them into sales.
When you market with keywords related to dog training, you don't want your incoming traffic to find a site that features some information about dog training plus a lot of information about parenting and cat care.
Most people will simply click away to find a site dedicated exclusively to dog training.
Time Management
When I first decided to create my own website and go into business for myself, I had an endless list of interests and passions that I wrote down in my initial brainstorming phase.
There were many different compelling topics that I would have enjoyed turning into a business, but I knew that I had to pick one specific niche and those topics wouldn't all fit into it together.
If I had decided to tackle all of them at once, I would have had to give up sleeping, family time, and everything else going on in my life.
When you work with one specified niche you will not bite off more than you can chew
In the end, I knew when I decided to create my own website that I had to pick one specific niche if I was going to be successful.
If I chose multiple niches and tried to target them all with one site it would be a confusing mess and would take up all of my free time.
If I tried to just target random products or information to anyone in general, I would have a hard time drawing in targeted traffic and converting real sales.
In this series we will explore 5 simple questions which you should ask yourself when selecting a niche for your own website.
