Some place in the world attract you because they are well advertised. Others attract you because they offer something unique that the rest of the world doesn''t (the pyramids, barrier reef etc). Then there are the places that seem to have been floating around your head forever without you even realizing it.

Basically, they are already in your subconscious. You just don''t realize it.

Nice in France is one such place. It has been talked about for absolutely ages, insinuating its way into tabloid stories, aristocratic getaways and high culture. It is a place where people, no matter who or where they are, think other more important people are out being glamorous.

Located at the heart of the French Riviera, Nice has done a very nice (pun intended) job of capitalizing upon its glamorous reputation. People want to be there, and more importantly, people want to be seen there. It is hard not to get swept along in the place.

The traffic may be a nightmare and the tourist hordes can be suffocating in summer, but amongst the tack and the bawdy streets are a smattering of art galleries and museums (over 20 in ...
... total), a lively old quarter and the wide Mediterranean seafront that brought visitors here in the first place.

Nice is still a conflicted place. You can visit the artistic retreats of such greats as Matisse, Chagall and Picasso, then enjoy the incredible local nightlife. Then you can take a ten minute drive into the graffiti laden suburbs that have made the place so large in the first instance.

That said, it shouldn''t put you off. Nice is more set up to cater to tourists than almost any city in France and things are now a lot cheaper than they ever were. Check out the internet. Sites like Octopus travel have deals on Nice Hotels that would have been unheard of a few years ago.
