Becoming A Speech Language Pathologist - The Obstacles Faced

Like all career paths, each comes with its own different trials, tribulations and triumphs. If you've got your heart set on becoming a speech language pathologist, then it is best you get to know of the obstacles faced and see if you're up for it before you venture out in that direction.
While this job gives you the chance to work in various fields, it is still a professional one, making you work with every case that walks through your door. Most of the time, despite the age, race or gender of your patient, you may find that they might be a little difficult to work with, especially if they didn't come in on their own. Your job would require you to work with those who've got speech impairments and this might cause your patients to be upset, angry or frustrated that they do not speak as well as you or those around them. In some cases, they may even refuse to work with you and throw tantrums as well so you would need to be extremely patient and kind.
Besides that, like most professions, you would need to endure a series of training and hands on experience in addition to your education. So unless you have the dedication, ...
... determination and passion for this field, do not start it or you would be in hurry to finish it. This doesn't only apply to this course but whatever professional field that you venture into. If you do it simply because you think it may be interesting or if you were forced into it, you wouldn't be able to enjoy the journey that leads you to the top.
Furthermore, you must allow room for occasional failures but do not give up until you see no light. This career might be one that can get a little frustrating at times as the biggest communication factor which is language might serve as a barrier here. As you would need to work with those who cannot speak properly, understanding and being understood can get a little hard at times, but do not give up even though your patient might. Force encouragement and keep trying until you see no room for improvements at all. Then, allow yourself to accommodate that failure and learn from these experiences and see what you can do to fix it. Do not let your downfalls get the better of you.
In addition to that, like doctors you would need to work closely with your patient so it is advised that you do not form emotional attachment of any sort or you would be in a bigger rut when it's time to leave or when failures come your way. Always remember that this is indeed a profession, a job and your work life.
