While most people imagine winters as something associated with Santa Claus and Christmas trees, people in Australia think otherwise. In fact, many Australian tourist visas will be surprised that Australia does have winter season, as most of them still picture the country as a large desert. And you will also enjoy the various activities that you can try out here during the period.

For those not familiar, being in the southern hemisphere, the seasons in Australia are in reverse order to that in the northern countries. Thus, winters actually come during the months of between June and August. On the other hand, since summers arrive during the holiday seasons, there is actually no such thing as a white Christmas here.

Another thing that you need to take note about Australia is that, since it has a rather large area, the climate actually varies greatly across the continent. Thus, the northern regions actually has only two seasons, a hot and dry summer and a wet (but still hot) rainy season. The four season climate is actually limited only to the southern states, and here, the temperature doesn't really get too cold, ...
... though there is still a significant amount of snowfall. However, despite the vast differences in climate, majority of the people in the country still refer to the period beginning in June as the winter months.

So what can you expect to do in the country during these months? Well, there are indeed a lot in store for you here. In fact, since most of the Australian continent is still practically the same during the winter as in the summer months, you will still be able to the things that you did in summer.

One thing that will surprise you is that winter is actually still a very good time to go to the beach in Australia. Queensland, in particular, enjoys a year round worth of sunshine. This one makes it ideal for visiting the many beaches that line up the Sunshine State's coast.

Aside from the usual recreational activities that you can do during this time of the year, there are also a lot interesting ones that you can go to. The Northern Territory is one of the places that you might want to check out. This seemingly sleepy state actually has a lot of festivities lined up for the winter months. One of the most visited here is the Bass in the Grass music fest held every May in Darwin. This one gathers up top musicians, not only coming from the Northern Territories, but also from other parts of Australia.

On the other hand, if you plan on exploring the snow, then Tasmania will be your best bet. The state receives one of the highest snowfall during these months. Mount Wellington, near the capital of Hobart is an ideal spot for skiers, as there are a lot of winter resorts that you can go to here.
