Indian Cement Industry - Gearing Up For Higher Growth
Demand of Indian Cement in the overseas Market
With government of India putting all its muscle behind the growth and development of infrastructure projects, housing facilities and road networks, the cement industry in India is currently growing at an unprecedented pace. Today, India is the second largest cement producer in the world after China with a total capacity of 151.2 Million Tones (MT). In the coming years, it is being reported that there would be further acceleration in the tempo of growth. In fact it is being estimated that the cement production in India would rise to 236. 16 MT in FY11. It's also projected to rise to 262.61 MT in FY12.
There are around 20 prominent companies in India in the cement domain. These 20 companies together contribute almost 70 percent to the total cement production in India. In the current year, the Indian cement companies have generated 11 MT cement during April-September 2009. It takes the total cement production in FY09 to 231 MT.

Indian Cement Industry is a century old industry and started getting organized in the early 1900s. In 1914, India Cement Company Ltd was set up in Porbandar. The World War I gave the initial push to the cement industry in India and the industry started growing at a fast rate in terms of manufacturing units, and installed capacity. The price and the distribution control system came into being in the year 1956, so as to ensure fair model for consumers as well as manufacturers.
However In 1977, the government set up new manufacturing units so as to put up a higher price tag for their products. A couple of years later, government put in a place a three-tier pricing system with different pricing system on cement manufactured in high, medium and low cost plants.
