Welding definition:
Welding is the process to joining the parent materials by fused together to a single piece.
Where high strength, very little amount of deflection, impact load and low vibration is required the welding process is most suited to use. The joint is made permanently as fabrication method. The fastener like nut bolt and rivet is replaced with this process. It is also used in repair the metal crack and broken metal parts to rejoin together. In this regard the welding is best suited point of view of strength and saving time but costlier than nut bolt and rivet joint.
Welding is classified into these groups:
Arc welding: - This welding process is produced by thermal electrical arc or spark. A closed loop of electric circuit with a small air gap and electric current is flow through it which causes electric spark. Due to spark or arc a huge quantity of heat is produced which about temperature from 32000C to 40000C. Many types of arc welding methods are there- 1. Carbon arc welding, 2. TIG welding, 3. MIG welding, 4. Submerged arc welding, 5. Shielded metal arc welding, 6. Plasma arc welding, ...
... 7. Flux cored arc welding, 8. Electro slag welding.
Gas welding: - This welding is called fusion welding joint process. The joint of metals are heated by a mixture of combustible fuel gas (Acetylene, propane, butane or hydrogen) and oxygen. There are four types of gas welding -
1. Air acetylene welding, 2. Oxy-acetylene welding, 3. Oxy-hydrogen welding, 4. Pressure gas welding.
Electric resistance welding: - It is called plastic or pressure welding process where coalescence is produced by heat by electric current flow through the electrode. There no need any electrode and joint is produced between two consecutive bodies. The pressure is needed to make welding perfectly. The types of resistance welding are-
1. Spot welding, 2. Seam welding, 3. Percussion welding, 4. High frequency welding, 5. Projection welding, 6. Resistance butt welding, 7. Flash butt welding, 8. Stud welding
Solid state welding: - The solid state welding describe as the coalescence is produced at temperature essentially below the melting point of base metal to joint. This welding is performed under applied pressure and there are no use of additional filler metal.
