Nursing Research Paper
Introduction
The article focuses on the effectiveness of a structured multifaceted mentorship program. It is an implementation journal of the evidence-based practice in a clinical research-intensive environment. Evidence-based practice is an explicit approach to the delivery of health care that uses the best evidence from research with expertise, patients’ hopes, likes, and values. Findings from the study show that EBP improves the patient’s outcomes, the quality of care, practitioner’s skills and reduce the variation and costs of the health care. It is a strategy of speeding the application of research in practice and optimization of the care delivery. The EBP process leads to greater consistency in the care provision, patient satisfaction due to improved outcomes and high-quality care. The relationship between research and practice remains substantial despite the many educational endeavors. The translation of the basic research into real life applications has complex and multifaceted challenges. Capacity building in the under-resourced environments requires that, the leaders use creativity in the identification ...
... of mentors, and engage the nursing staff in the process
Many barriers exist for the implementation of the EBP process in many healthcare systems. They include; insufficient knowledge and EBP skills by professionals, misconceptions, lack of administrative support and resources and lack of EBP mentors. The findings indicate that those having high knowledge and beliefs about the value of EBP are likely to teach others about it.
Summary of the key points
The article uses the ARCC model that is an application within a research-intensive environment. The advancing research and clinical practice through close collaboration model is a mentorship framework for assisting the advanced practice nurses in implementing EBP. The first step in the model is the assessment of the culture and readiness of the organization for the EBP. It helps in the identification of the facilitators and barriers and a plan to deal with them. The choice of the model was due to its focus on the high-level practice nurses as EBP mentors and its involvement of all staff in the implementation.
The study used a quasi-experimental mixed method of design. Nurses who took part in the findings would later take part in mentoring others in all specialties in all the nursing departments. Data collection involved online survey and discussion groups.
Data analysis was through qualitative analysis of the focused discussion prior to the online survey. The analysis included descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation tests, and parametric tests for the group differences in the EBP beliefs and implementation, nurses’ retention, group cohesion and the job satisfaction.
The focus group findings showed that clinical specialists had the most knowledge of EBP. The next were the nurse managers, and the clinical practice council members were not consistent in using the EBP. The survey results showed that those who worked for more than three years had a vast exposure to EBP in nursing school or through continued education.
Participants in the evidence-based practice mentorship program had positive impacts on the nurse’s perceptions. It had a basis in the organizational culture and the readiness of proof based practice. It also depends on the beliefs and practice implementation. Leadership support for a culture of proof based practice and the dedication of resources for the sustainability of the initiative need to be the priorities for engaging staff at all levels.
