Microsoft Outlook PST files are either ANSI or Unicode formatted. Each e-mail you receive in MS Outlook gets piled up and adds to the existing size of your PST. Whether you are using an ANSI PST or a Unicode PST, a large PST is always prone to issues like, slow performance, file corruption, and other similar problems. Unicode PST files have much higher size limit (20 GB, by default) than its ANSI counterpart (2 GB) and thus are found to be less susceptible to corruption. Due to all these reasons, Outlook users frequently employ practices that help them to manage the size of their PST, one of the common being to Split PST File.

Large PST files have always been a topic of discussion among Outlook users. PST stored on a network drive with multi-user access has chances to grow more quickly. For example, consider an organization in which a server administrator decides to create a single PST and permits several Outlook users to have network access of the file and store the e-mails that they want to archive.

As a result, more and more e-mails are stored in the PST file on a daily basis. Consequently, the file grows to ...
... a considerable size. Now, when the connected users try to access the file, it is slow to load or shows abrupt symptoms.

Such situations often require solutions that can help users to manage the file size.

Important Note: Storing PST files on any shared network is not recommended by Microsoft. There have been many release notes on this. A network stored PST file can get corrupted.

How to Solve?

To manage the size of the PST file, stored on a network drive, you should move the file to a local computer and apply one of the below mentioned steps:

(1) Delete undesired e-mails, empty the 'Deleted Items' folder, and compact the PST.

(2) Create another PST and import e-mails to reduce the original file size.

(3) Use a third-party Split PST software. These utilities are designed to Split Large PST File and create several smaller PST files from the original file, each with valid content and format.

Stellar Phoenix PST File Splitter is the safest option that should be opted for splitting large PST files. It doesn't change the original PST, but merely creates smaller PST files. It is a reliable Split PST File utility with a simple user-interface. It supports MS Outlook 2007, 2003, 2002, and 2000.
