Demineralised water is a form of water that has been purified through a process of ion exchange. This kind of clarified water is suitable for a number of uses such as in the pharmacy, manufacturing, and automotive industry.

Impurities such as magnesium, calcium, and sodium are present in raw water. After water has been demineralised, it is devoid of any impurity ions and mineral salts that are present in raw water.

These can compromise the validity of certain industrial processes by interfering with and contaminating substances.

Another benefit of demineralised water is that it is safe to use on sensitive surfaces and equipment without the danger of corroding these surfaces. This is of value, particularly in the automotive and electronics industry.

Let us explore some industry applications of demineralised water:

1.Automotive Industry

The presence of calcium in raw water can lead to the formation of build-up which can damage metal parts used in the automotive industry. This calcium content is removed when water is demineralised and is most commonly used in lead-acid batteries, gas-turbine ...
... engines, and cooling systems of cars as well as aircrafts.

2.Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

Demineralised water is used widely for manufacturing of pharmaceutical products. This type of water is referred to as ‘aqua’ and helps control the quality and safety of ingredients used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry.

3.Electronics

Washing circuit boards is an essential and common activity in the electronics industry. After a board has been manufactured, it leaves behind a substance called flux. If this flux is not removed from the board, it can have long-term damages like corrosion which hamper the performance.

4.Laboratory Applications

In labs water is used as a solvent, to prepare buffer solutions, to dilute chemical concentrations, and also as a cleaning agent for containers and equipment. Demineralised water helps to ensure the following:

i. The data obtained is precise

ii. The integrity of experiments, analysis, and final products is maintained

iii. Unwanted residue is not left behind on sensitive equipment or in formulations

5.Other Applications

Owing to its versatile nature, demineralised water has uses that extend beyond the above-mentioned industries. It is used in the petrochemical sector to treat cooling tower-blow down, laser-cutting and cooling, to control pH levels in aquariums.

Demineralised water is valuable for the vital industry applications it provides along with its ability to support scientific processes as well. The grade of demineralised water is highly dependant on the water purification systems used to clarify raw water, so it is recommended to choose a high-quality system.
