During your time spent in Dubai, you can take a break from the usual sightseeing schedules and head to the mountain town of Hatta. This would give you the chance to travel back in time when forts, towers, and citadels were the dominant features in the region. It was once known as 'Al Hajerin' or 'Al Hajeran', often referring to the mountain peaks guarding its borders at both ends. This quiet town is located in the midst of Hajar Mountains and is home to the Hatta Fort. It also houses the remains of an old village. You can reach this town by travelling 130 kilometres south-east of central Dubai.

Your cheap holidays to Dubai can be made truly interesting by exploring Hatta. It has some magnificent mountain cliffs, springs, and lush green valleys that give you a refreshing change from the towering high-rises of the city. This region has fertile land and an irrigation system called 'falaj', which was once a reason for the town's thriving agriculture and has now been restored. People who lived in the villages earned their livelihood through ...
... the cultivation of palm trees, dates, and their by-products. The dates were also harvested for domestic consumption.

There were other uses of the date palms as well. Leaves of the palm trees were woven into mats, carpets, and fans and the tree-trunks were utilised for the construction of tents and houses. Even today, farming continues to be one of the main activities in this mountain town with over 500 farms operating across an area of 140 square kilometres. A visit to this town during your cheap holidays to Dubai would allow you to explore the remnants of small farms that existed within this region. You can also know about the future plans for Hatta while exploring the town.

Life in this area has improved significantly after the construction of Hatta Dam towards the end of the 20th century. Earlier, the residents relied on springs and groundwater wells for their requirements of water owing to the scarcity of rainwater. Today, water is available throughout the year in the valleys with the addition of rainwater during winters. You can visit the Hatta Dam while enjoying your holidays to Dubai and savour the mesmerising views of rugged mountains and turquoise waters. The dam is now among the major attractions of this area. Visitors to this dam can also take photographs at certain points or indulge in trekking expeditions on the hilly terrain.

A must-visit in the heart of this charming town is the Hatta Heritage Village. It was opened in the year 2001 after much preservation and reconstruction by the government. The village showcases life in rural areas centuries ago with reconstructed traditional buildings and huts. You'll also get to witness 'Bait Al Wali', which is one of the largest houses in the village where the ruler used to reside. The house has a courtyard, a shaded seating area, and many rooms. The Hatta Heritage Village would be a perfect place for an afternoon visit along with your entire family.
