Missed It By That Much: 3 Deserving Scientists That Never Won A Noble Prize
The importance and prestige Nobel awards in the field of science are something that’s undebatable. But time and time again, the bunch sitting in Sweden that decides who takes this award home, has taken decisions that have become a subject for debate. While not as ambiguous and debatable as the Nobel peace prize, the Nobel awards given for theories or discoveries in Sciences have snubbed people who were far more deserving than the real winners. While some scientists were not even nominated once, many others won the same by basing their works on of the works of former ones.
But given the fact that Nobel awards are rarely given posthumously, all we can do is to sit and appreciate the scientists who were rejected by this much revered and craved prize. An insight into the history of these awards will help you crack various examinations that you are willing to take on after your CCS University Result 2019.
Dimitri Mendeleev
Mendeleev is perhaps the most famous Chemist that the world would ever see. The reason is ...
... quite simple. No student of chemistry could ever do without learning the periodic table, given by this very scientist. Mendeleev was the first scientist who established that elements and their properties are closely dependent upon their atomic masses. He was the first one to place elements with identical properties alongside.
This relation showing that the physical and chemical properties of elements are the function of their atomic masses made it possible for scientists to predict the properties of metals that were yet to be discovered.
Going by the importance that Mendeleev's periodic table was set to bring, the Russian scientist was nominated for a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this very work in the year 1906. But after being challenged by his other contemporaries for the innovation of his work, the Swedish committee chose Henri Moissan for that year.
S.N. Bose
Ever heard of the “Bose-Einstien” condensate? Or the famous “Higgs-Boson” particle famously known as the “God particle”? One thing that’s common between them is the prefix “Bose”, after the great Indian scientist Satyendra Nath Bose. Bose was one of those scientists who had the honor of working with Albert Einstien and Marie Curie in Europe’s X-ray and crystallography laboratories. His 1924’s paper on Planck's quantum radiation law which he later sent to Einstien was translated into German by the German scientist himself.
Bose published many papers in the field of Physics, building the premise for particle statistics. Although many physicists later worked and received Nobel prize for working on the concepts related to the Bose-Einstein Condensate, the Indian scientist himself never got this one prestigious prize. But he never really cared for any such recognition. When once asked how he felt about the cold behavior of the Swedish committee for Nobel Prize of Physics towards him, he said: I have got all the recognition I deserve.
Ludwig Boltzmann
Widely known for his Boltzmann constant, this Austrian physicist and philosopher did wonders in the field of statistical statistics. His work has proved to be a milestone in explaining how the physical properties of elements depend upon the physical properties of their atoms. Boltzmann was a prominent name in his field, which led to him collaborating with the likes of Josef Stefan and James Maxwell. According to experts, the credit of creating the statistical mechanics, single-handedly, goes to this Austrian scientist. But even after his name was brought up for as many as 5 times, 3 times in 1906 alone, the man never won the Nobel prize for Physics.
