Based on the electrolyte technology, lead acid batteries are of two types - Wet cell Batteries and Gel cell batteries. The wet cell batteries also called flooded lead-acid batteries are the most common form of inverter batteries and require more maintenance. They contain a liquid electrolyte such as sulfuric acid. Besides, they are required to be kept in an upright position all the time.

On the other hand, Gel cell batteries also called Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries are free of maintenance. They contain a gel-like electrolyte which is formed by mixing sulfuric acid with fumed silica. They are expensive than the wet cell ones and requires cleaning.

Based on the plate technology, inverter battery can be broadly categorized into two types - Flat plate batteries and tubular inverter batteries.

Flat plate inverter batteries have lower life span than tubular batteries and they are more resistant to heat. On the other hand, tubular inverter batteries have higher ability to produce and accept current in comparison to flat plate batteries. Both the flat plate and tubular batteries are available in the wet cell as well as gel cell options in the market.
