Many smartphone manufacturers launched or demonstrated prototypes of 5G phones at this year's Mobile World Congress. While many mobile phones display support for 5G features below 6GHz, they omits the mmWave feature because most Western carriers will not support this feature in 2019. In contrast, Sony's event this year showcased the prototype of a 5G smartphone. Support mmWave. With Japan's NTT Docomo plans to launch support for the technology this year, Sony has the opportunity to become one of the first 5G mmWave handset suppliers in its domestic market.

Like other mmWave devices on display at the show, Sony's prototype 5G smartphone is based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon X50 modem, which for technical reasons must be paired with its 855 application processor. The phone features Sony's iconic design and sharp edges, with Sony's stylish 21:9 aspect ratio OLED display. At the same time, because the phone uses a number of dedicated mmWave antennas, the phone is quite large: it looks longer than the recently introduced Xperia X1, and it is also very thick.

The prototype smartphone has a dual-module camera with Zeiss optics ...
... and two LED flashers on the back. There is also a self-timer camera in front. Although it should be noted that since we are talking about prototypes, the commercial version may get different/upgraded imaging capabilities. For physical connections, the phone has a USB Type-C port for data transfer and charging.

Sony did not say when it plans to launch its Xperia 5G smartphone, but because the prototype is powered by Qualcomm's modern platform, it is certain that the company is inclined to launch commercial products as early as possible. Keep in mind that this year NTT Docomo will support the mmWave band, and Sony's launch plan is likely to depend on the deployment of NTT Docomo, at least to some extent.
Sony presented its first 5G device at the 2019 World Mobile Communications Conference (MWC2019). According to OEMs, this smartphone is only called AG-1. The company says it runs on the Snapdragon 855.

Sony asserts that the AG-1 can use protocols below 6 GHz and 5 mm waves associated with the next generation radio band. It also seems to be running Android 9 (Pie). In addition, due to its 21:9 aspect ratio, it has a very high appearance, which also appears in the new 4G Xperia 1. On the other hand, the Sony representative did mention that the company may not necessarily adhere to these aesthetics and they will continue to develop their first 5G mobile phone in the future.

However, Sony did not provide any indication of when the AG-1 based finished product could be sold. Since the X50 modem has now launched the second-generation X55, it is hoped that the Japanese electronics giant will not wait too long to release its initial attempt to enter the emerging 5G market.

Sony is also active in the 5G field. “We are working with our global partners to make 5G – below 6 GHz and millimeter waves – this is the reality. You can find the prototype of the Sony 5G mmWave smartphone on display at MWC at our booth.

In terms of overall performance and platform functionality, the Xperia 1 is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC with 6 GB LPDDR4X and 64 or 128 GB NAND flash. The smartphone does not support 5G, but it still supports Gigabit 4G / LTE, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, GALILEO and other advanced features of the platform.
