Steel bollards are perhaps the ultimate bollard for security purposes and whether you fix them in place yourself or get professional help will vary. Some property managers may already have the necessary expertise and equipment to carry out this sort of work. Others may struggle if they have never attempted anything like this before and their skills are not up to scratch. Let’s take a closer look at some of the issues involved with fixing a steel bollard into place.

The Steel Bollard Type Matters

Some steel bollards are surface mounted, and others need to be sunk into the ground. Broadly speaking, sinking a bollard into the ground will be well beyond the capability of a casual DIY enthusiast or a dedicated handyman. The holes need to be drilled very precisely, the steel bollard placed carefully and the foundation established. This is even more relevant if you’re looking to install a removable or retractable bollard that has a protective sleeve for holding and mounting the bollard located under the ground. Fixing Steel Bollards to a Surface

If you want to fix a static, fold down flat or removable steel bollard to a road surface this is a very different process compared to fixing into the ground. This type of work is fairly easy to do if you have a good placement plan in place and the time to carry out the installation work. No special training or specialised equipment is required, and many people may already have the tools to carry out this type of installation. There are nine main steps to follow if you want to fix a steel bollard in place.

Check the bollards for the instructions and fixings.
Mark the area where you want to site the bollard with chalk.
Place the bollard and mark where you need to drill.
Use a hammer drill with a 14mm masonry drill bit and drill to a depth of 120mm and clear the holes by moving the drill up and down a few times.
Clear away the dust and debris.
Place the supplied plastic plugs into the cleaned out holes and hammer them home gently.
Put the bollard back in place and line it up with the drilled holes.
Secure the steel bollard in place using the supplied machine screws and be careful not to over tighten to avoid damaging the plastic plugs.
Clean up and move on to the next bollard.

This process can easily be completed by a single worker with no special tools. However, if you have help or hire a professional the work can be completed faster and with far less disruption.
