The Xperia 10 Plus is a rugged, mid-range phone from Sony that is perfect for movie lovers. This is our full review

Sony Xperia 10 Plus comprehensive evaluation

The Xperia 10 Plus is a large-screen mid-range phone that tries to solve some long-standing smartphone problems - the phone is too big but people still want to watch TV and movies.

Although the mobile phone solves this problem to some extent, it is not the best mobile phone in the price range, and we do not recommend using a mobile phone with similar specifications. But it's definitely a better phone for the smaller Xperia 10. If you sell it in form factor, it's worth the extra cost.

Price and availability

The Sony Xperia 10 Plus is priced at £349/$429, which is £50/$70 higher than the small Xperia 10. In the UK, you can get it from Sony, Giff, Avgo and Very, while in the US you can get it from Best.

Considering that the specifications here are a bit too high - the Moto G7 Plus with the same processor costs only £269, a reduction of £80. With the Snapdragon 845, the powerful ...
... Pocophone F1 is actually £20 less than the Xperia 10 Plus.

Lanky looks

The phone has a weird shape that you will love or hate. It's like your average black plastic smartphone tablet has been stretched to a breakpoint with a display height of 21:9 6.5 inches. The filmmakers use the same aspect ratio, and Sony's goal is a niche that not everyone will see the attraction.

This means that the phone is quite slim but very tall, unlike the smaller Xperia 10, which is not easy to use with one hand. We are here in the very standard Sony design field, our black comment unit (silver, navy or pink is also available) looks like a slender Xperia XZ1 with fewer top and bottom borders, plastic back instead of metal.

Sony brought back the side-mounted fingerprint sensor that was finally seen on the phone, but unfortunately it was not a physical button like the one before, but the power/lock button on it was static. The situation is even worse.

If you like Sony's barbaric design trend, then you will like the look of the 10 Plus, because Sony has abandoned the curved appearance of the XZ2 and XZ3 - it really can't make up its mind. But the general design of the phone is not from Sony, but the display.

Widescreen ambition

For mid-range devices with a resolution of 2520x1080, the LCD screen looks great. Netflix movies on streaming look great, with good contrast and brightness, and Sony is pushing more than half of the movies on the platform to be 21:9, so you get a full-screen experience. There is no mailbox and no gaps.

After a few years of flagship phones with grooves and cutouts that generally block video and content, using the Xperia 10 Plus to place a mini-cinema-style screen in our pocket is a relief. Unless you find yourself traveling and don't want to carry a tablet or laptop, it's not the ideal size screen for watching movies.

In portrait mode, the phone has some useful multitasking skills because of its height. We’ve found that when we’re using the SMS or Maps app in the bottom half, we’ll post YouTube videos to the top third of the display, which is useful if other phones don’t display enough information.

Even if there is a keyboard on the screen, there is plenty of room for typing, reading messages and watching videos. This is the dream of the millennial generation.

We found the performance of the smaller Xperia 10 to be impressive, so if you want a better everyday experience, the 10 Plus is the best choice. 3 to 4GB of extra memory with the Snapdragon 636 is a better internal combination that lets the phone run at a good speed - even with mid-range specifications, you can get even less on other phones like the Moto G7 Plus.

Benchmarking mobile phones with similar prices and specifications, the Xperia 10 Plus has its own features, but it's not powerful enough to play the most demanding mobile games.

Cam cam

The Xperia 10 Plus has a different, better camera setting to the smaller 10. It has dual 12Mp f / 1.8 and 8Mp f / 2.4 lenses, the latter is telephoto allowing 2x optical zoom. This is great on mid-range phones, if you take a lot of photos, you can come in handy.

The quality is very modest, just as you expect from the price, daylight is the best condition for shooting. Indoor and low-light shots are grainy and noisy, while night shots are definitely not.

The selfie camera is 8Mp f / 2.0, and there are some really scary landscaping options that we have been sticking to. Portrait selfies and bokeh mode are acceptable for casual photography, but you won't want to rely on these cameras to get more than aiming and shooting.

The best rest

All in all, the Xperia 10 Plus is a rugged phone. If it's not outstanding, the battery life is good, it can let you use it all day without any problems. Wired audio (via headphones) can be improved with LDAC, the call quality is good, and the audio is very powerful.
