Introduction
A social class is a status order in which individuals and societies are classified on the grounds of esteem and prestige. The esteem and prestige are acquired through economic achievements and accumulation of wealth. Social class refers to the specific level in the status hierarchy. There are four common classes identified in an ideal society. They include; the upper, middle, working, and the lower classes. In the American society, it is easy to note that there exist large differences in wealth, material possessions, power and authority, and prestige. The same applies to the access to education, health care, and leisure. Social classes may arise due to an unequal distribution of resources, authority, and power. Status may be a form of inequality in terms of physical abilities, intelligence, beauty, or occupation types. Therefore in sociology, a Social class refers to a group of people occupying a similar level in the economic system of production. Class talk has many things that it reveals especially regarding differences among groups, gender, and race. Most of the major issues identified in the class talks ...
... are indicators of the impacts of the social classes in the society.
Reflection and analysis
I chose the topic due to the different views and perceptions that people have concerning social class. Adults have a clear understanding of the social classes that make them have varying talks about it. I realized that, the experiences that people have in life serves as a basis for the social class talk. Men and women talk about differing issues concerning social classes. In addition, people from different social classes have different views about social class. My analysis shows that, the ethnic group or race of an individual; is also very significant in shaping the class talk. Therefore, social class talk is diverse among the varying characteristics of people. Another aspect is the context in which people talk about social classes. The context of the communication or talk is also a source of great differences in talks regarding social classes. Most of the talk I monitored is through the media though other platforms served as good sources of information.
I learned that the social class talk occur in almost every conversation between individuals or groups of people. They have various ideas about social classes, but the themes exhibited are similar. The frequency of the talk about social class depends on the context in which the participants are and their gender. Women are fond of having lengthy and detailed talks with an emphasis on their concerns. They talk about social classes in whatever place and condition. On the contrary, men tend to be a bit more reserved in their talks, and hence have controlled communications. The well up in the society talks less about social class as compared to the middle and lower class people. It is probably because most of the consequences of the social classes affect the middle and low-class people.
The talk about social classes is an everyday affair for many people I listened to in their daily activities. There are common things that emerged from the talks. They include differences in social status, consequences of the class levels in education, health, and employment, and the struggles of each social class. Most of my observations revealed that the media plays an important role in facilitating class talks since it reaches many people within a short period. The context of the talk also matters in determining the amount of information shared between people. In the school set up, people have restrictions based on the time and the environment. They cannot talk much due to the demands of their work. However, those at home or in the open places of interactions tend to have prolonged talks without any restrictions. The funny thing about all the class talks is their relationship to the ethnic groups. The association of certain ethnic groups with class status is a common practice in many societies. Hence, even their talk differs by their ethnic groups.
Themes identified
The major themes identified in the class talks are differences in social status, effects of the social classes, and the struggles of different classes. In almost every class talk, there are issues of the differences in the social status that emerge. I realized that people do not fail to recognize the diverse social status between the rich and the less fortunate in the society. They claim that the rich do not like associating much with the others in fear of being disturbed. On the other hand, the fewer fortunate people avoid many associations with the rich since they feel inadequate in everything. The issue of social status in the adult talk has a heated debate since it touches every aspect of their lives.
The other major theme in the class talk is the consequences of the social classes. My conclusion from the talks is that education level and the social class of an individual is closely related. A common direction in the talks is that the upper-class parents are able to send their children to exclusive schools with a high-quality education. The other lower class people cannot even afford to pay for their children’s’ school fees and hence most of them do not achieve much academically. The scenario further perpetuates class divisions across the two groups. Education is a considerate factor in determining one’s level of the society. I realized that the divisions created in the levels of education achieved affect the nature of social interactions.
Another effect of social class identified is differences in health and nutrition. The social class of an individual impacts the physical health and the ability to access the health services. The class talks about health seem interesting because no one can have control over health status. The well up people claim that a lot of their resources go to medical bills. However, the lower class people experience many health problems due to their economic status. Most of them complain about high rates of infant mortality, cancers, cardiovascular illnesses, and physical malformations from injuries.
The other issue brought out by class differences as identified in the class talk is the freedoms enjoyed in the workplace. The low-class people complain of limited freedom in their occupations that the upper middle or middle class. The middle and upper-middle are more respected, have diversity, and demonstrates authority. The low class is mistreated and never satisfied with their occupations. The physical conditions of the workplaces also differ between classes. Some low-class people complain of adverse health risks, injuries, and risky working conditions due to lack of comprehensive insurance cover. Class talks reveal much about diversity in the society for an observer interested in learning about certain issues.
Another common theme in the class talks is the struggles of each class. One may tend to think that the upper-middle or middle-class people do not face challenges which are a misunderstanding. Each social level has its unique challenges. The class talks I listened to revealed that the magnitudes of the challenges may differ, but each social class has struggles.
