Dear Editor,
Whenever the term ‘education’ lingers in my mind, I am most concerned. Whenever I find students hover around looking for a place conducive for studying after school, I become rueful. All are aware that education is imperative and have no replacement. Why then is the society limiting the chances of children to exhaust the spring of a brighter life ahead? I have written a chain of letters to other editors such as The New York Post and Newsday, social forum and educational officers but have not witnessed a change, leave alone a reply. I am writing to convey my sincere concern about why hours get cut in our branch libraries. As a matter of fact, the City Representative urges that all branch libraries should close on Mondays. In addition, some branches have already started implementation of this rule and close early on Saturday, reopening on Tuesdays. This move has been defined as a cost-cutting measure that the City attributes to a hike of electricity and the over said time for renovation. This letter gets addressed to the editor in chief of The Denver Post, Houston Chronicle, Star Tribune, Boston Globe, ...
... Daily News and the USA Today.
I am a librarian at the JDS Branch, and thus have a direct knowledge of my claim. I work weekday afternoons and morning weekends. JDS branch get located downtown where it nears the proximity of five schools (Primary and High schools) in addition to being accessible to a three colleges. Every day, as a school day ends, dozens of students file their way into the library where they find a humble time to do homework. Some come with the motive of using the library’s 17 computers to for research particularly the college ones while others find JDS a safe place to socialize. Some of these children have no other alternatives. Many of these students would otherwise go home to empty houses, with no reading rooms, or far towards the fact, have no fuel or electricity to study at night. Therefore, this library is the one place that provides a secure, supervised alternative to being home alone attached to their thoughts.
In addition to providing a studying environment, many libraries have erected several after-school programs that provide students who are through with doing homework something constructive to do. That enables the children to grow wider in other areas. Many library customers commend the conduct of the young people whether reading or not. In remarkable occasions, teachers have called saying that some of their struggling students’ work have improved since they began spending their afternoons constructively at the library. Parents have also commended us saying they are grateful for the library’s welcome to their children. All these show the need of libraries; that lead to a healthier education to the scholars of our nation. Closing on Mondays and weekends poses a major disruption for these children. Nevertheless, I am certain that there exist other measures that can be instituted to save money without risking the safety of children their safety and the productive utilization of their afternoons.
I would recommend that all these libraries operate twenty-four hours or if not, close at midnight. Secondly, the ministry of education should fund the libraries since they are public non-profit making institutions. That will solve the financial problem faced by these libraries. In addition, I find no sense in closing the library considering that all reasons articulated for the move are implausible. During the day, libraries can make use of solar light and only use electricity for powering computers. That would control power charges. Moreover, some libraries, like JDS have several guards more than necessary considering its size. Reducing their number can save money for other necessary projects to better the services of the libraries. The cost of running them can also get controlled by balancing the operating hours. Currently, the library runs twenty-four hours from Tuesday to Friday. If the hours could get balanced to until eleven o’clock at night, the cost would almost match or become lower than that of the current plan. Education is a core discipline of life and limiting the chances of student developing it means hampering their chances to excel. An educated nation is a healthy nation. We have to clear all humps in the path of leading to the excellence of learning.
In conclusion, I have no doubt that most readers would conquer with my complaint. I would thus leave them the responsibility, urging them to contact their City Council representatives. In the urge to end the low profile of education standards.
