Hybrid laptops are often overpriced or underpowered, but has HP managed to balance the two with Spectre Folio? Find the answer in our full review.

Price at the time of review

From $1,299 | The model reviewed $1,499

HP Spectre Folio Comprehensive Review

The HP Spectre Folio is a striking hybrid that is surrounded by leather – and that's not the only area where it stands out from the competition. It has a unique movement mechanism that includes two hinges. For beginners, it has a CPU that improves efficiency compared to silicon used elsewhere.

Although this machine is very attractive, its price is a bit high.

When a stronger competitor can be reduced, is it enough to convince us of its value?

Price and Availability

There is currently only one available HP Spectre Folio model in the UK, which will give you a return of £1,499. You can purchase it directly from HP or Currys PC World.

This is not the case in the US. If you are satisfied with the lower specifications, the machine starts at $1,299. Otherwise it will get you back to $1,499, but it's worth noting HP's bundled ...
... product, where Folio includes headphones, Bluetooth speakers and sleeves.

Hewlett-Packard will release the Folio version with Burgundy leather instead of the brown version included here, and will also launch a 4K screen later in the spring - although HP has yet to confirm how much extra cost and higher resolution models are needed.

Check out the charts of the best laptops we can buy.

Design and Construction

The look and feel of Folio is great. Brown leather covers the back of the screen and the base, and bypasses the front of the machine. The keyboard and screen are tightly attached to the material. This is not a normal case.

Folio's leather and metal parts blend perfectly, and the edges are finished with neat stitching. A subtle HP logo imprinted on the back, metal hinges - look and function similar to the spine - still hidden behind more leather.

If you attend a meeting with this machine, people will think that you have a smart folder full of files - not your laptop.

The hinge allows Folio to open smoothly without a lot of power. It's not the only hinge - there's another half on the back of the screen.

The auxiliary hinge allows the panel to be tilted forward by an angle of 60°. It is mounted on a ridge between the keyboard and the trackpad, allowing Folio to be used for viewing movies or using a touch screen at a more comfortable angle. It can move forward again and lie flat like a traditional tablet.

The machine's leather and metal parts are manufactured with excellent quality, and the leather also secures the unit to the table.

It looks just as good as any competitor. It's more eye-catching than the ferrous metal and materials on the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 hybrid, which is more mature than the metal and carbon fiber blend of the Dell XPS 13. Its price is no lower than the latest MacBook Air.
The Folio weighs 1.49 kg and has a thickness of 15.2 mm. These sizes are not bad - but all of its competitors are thinner.

Keyboard and Trackpad

The slim design means a slim keyboard. These buttons only have a 1.3 mm stroke. You don't have a numeric keypad, but the buttons are very spaced, the font is clear, and the backlight is good.

Short buttons quickly become apparent. There is a clear lack of travel - the keys have a lot of speed and fast action, but they don't move much and feel light. Both Apple and Dell machines have a stronger, more defined typing experience.

If you really like the relaxed, flat typing experience, then Folio's keyboard is a great example of this form - anyway, you can browse at any time during web browsing and typing sessions. However, if you want higher, higher tactile feedback for higher, higher buttons, it is definitely not the best option.

There are no major problems with the touchpad. The surface responds quickly and the buttons are light and lively. It's a bit small compared to the hardware on the right laptop, but it's not an obstacle.

Folio's 13.3-inch screen features full HD resolution and a Gorilla glass coating and a full HD webcam in the bezel above the panel.

The Folio is equipped with a stylus with 1,024 pressure points. This is far less than the 4,096 provided by the Microsoft Surface Pen, but this is a £100 accessory - we have never had any precise questions about Folio's hardware.

The display density level is 166ppi very good - enough clear enough for everyday work applications, web browsing and watching movies.

However, there are clearer screens everywhere else - even with a higher resolution, there is not much difference in addition to a little more clarity and more screen space.

The important thing is that the quality level is very good. 383cd / m2 brightness measurement ensures that there is enough backlight impact to make.
