Discover yourself at the Muktinath Temple, Nepal
Have you ever felt the need of discovering yourself in this lost world?
Have you ever felt you need to know the real essence of life?
Have you ever felt the need to connect to your inner self?
If you answered all the above questions with a Yes, the
Muktinath Temple in the Mustang District of Nepal should top your bucket list of spirituality. This holy temple in the Muktinath Tour is held in high esteem by both Buddhists and Hindus alike is the definitive place to find liberation or Moksha. The Pagoda style temple that is dedicated to Lord Vishnu is relevant to Hindu Vaishnavas as it is regarded among the eight important shrines that are considered sacred in the religion. Buddhists believe the place to be abode of Dakinis or the sky dancers. They call the temple ‘Chumig Gyatsa’ that translates to ‘Hundred waters’.
Significance of the Temple
The beautiful Muktinath temple looks mesmerizing against the backdrop of snow-covered Annapurna Range. It is ...
... located at an altitude of 3710 meters, at the foot of the Thorong La Mountain Pass. The temple is a religious symbol of close association between the Hindus and the Buddhists. As per the Hindu mythology, it was here at the temple that Lord Vishnu attained salvation from the curse of Jalandhar’s wife, Brinda. So the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped as Muktinath or the Lord of salvation here.
According to the Buddhists, the temple is among the 24 well-regarded Tantric places and is known to be the home of Dakinis or the sky dancers. They call the temple the ‘Chumig Gyatsa’ which literally means ‘Hundred waters’.
Inside the Temple
The beautiful pagoda style Muktinath temple is small in size and has a life size statue of Lord Vishnu inside. There are images of other gods and goddesses as well. Behind the temple there are 108 bull shaped water spouts that are built in stone on a semi-circular wall. They are raised at a height of seven feet and are approximately one foot apart. The ice cold water of the Kali Gantaki River is directed to flow from each of these 108 water spouts. The pilgrims visiting the temple consider it to be pious to take a holy walk under all the 108 water fountains.
The other major attraction beside the temple is a small Buddhist monastery right at the entrance of the temple. It is called the Mebar Lha Gomba and is visited by both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims after they have visited the temple. The monastery is dedicated to Guru Rimpoche also known as Padmasambhava and has a statue of Chenrezig, a Buddhist deity. What adds a little miracle to the place is the natural gas fire that burns 24x7 and manages to amaze the pilgrims and tourists alike. Hindus worship the same fire as Jwala Mai or the goddess of Fire.
Reaching the Temple
The Muktinath Tour can be done in the following ways:
 One can travel by road to reach the temple. The journey starts from Kathmandu to Pokhara to Jomsom to muktinath yatra.
 The other option is to take a flight. Starting from Kathmandu to Pokhara and then to Jomsom. There are no direct flights to Jomsom.
 The easiest option of Muktinath Tour is to take a helicopter from Kathmandu and fly till Ranipauwa where the helipad is located. From Ranipauwa, take a thirty minutes walk to the temple, enjoy peaceful darshan and fly back to Kathmandu from Ranipauwa (after a thirty minutes walk back to Ranipauwa helipad).
 For the adventure lovers, there is a trek to Muktinath temple as well. The trek starts from Nayapul, an hour drive from Pokhara and takes about 7 nights.
