DENTAL CARE TIPS
Tip 1 - Use the right brushing technique.
A soft-bristled toothbrush should be placed at an angle of forty-five degrees to the periodontium (your gums). The brush should be moved with gentle strokes to and fro in the direction of the tooth enamel rods i.e in a perpendicular direction. The buccal (sides), lingual (back), & labial (front) surfaces should be covered using this technique.
Circular motion can be used in the posterior molar region. The brush should be gently tilted to avoid any damage to the gums. This technique is also called the Horizontal Scrub Technique and is very effectively removes plaque. Clean your teeth and gums twice a day, once in the morning and once in the night.
Tip 2 - Use the right toothpaste.
Use a fluoride toothpaste as the fluoride ions convert the calcium hydroxyapatite crystals in the enamel to calcium fluorapatite which is more resistant to caries and decay. sodium lauryl sulfate helps in avoiding dental problems due to its deep cleansing action.
For people with sensitive teeth, a toothpaste like Sensodyne containing potassium nitrate ...
... helps in relieving sensitivity as it blocks the dentinal tubules. An ideal toothpaste should contain abrasives such as calcium carbonate, dehydrated silica and aluminum oxides which help in removing debris and tartar with its dental action. People with bad breath can use a mint flavored toothpaste such as close up that freshens your breath. Brush regularly and don't forget to brush your tongue as well. An electric toothbrush can be used if a person is physically challenged.
Tip 3 - Don't forget to floss
Brushing your teeth is not enough, to maintain healthy teeth you need to brush and floss as well. Flossing daily can help you get rid of the plaque to maintain a healthy mouth. Your dental floss can reach deep-seated debris which is impossible for a regular toothbrush to reach.
You can improve your overall health of the gums as well when flossing is inculcated in your dental hygiene regimens. A piece of dental floss is made from PTFE or nylon which is very biocompatible with your oral cavity. You can use your thumbs or wrap the floss over your middle fingers and move it in the interproximal area (between your teeth) to reap the benefits of flossing.
Tip 4 - Avoid smoking and tobacco
Mouth cancer is an epidemic in countries like India. Tobacco smoking can increase the activity of cancer cells (squamous cells). Radiation therapy can be exhausting once the organs such as salivary glands are affected as it can breach the basement membrane and can spread to the other parts of the body. Survival rates are less once the tumor becomes malignant, and can be diagnosed using a brush biopsy. Early stages of oral cancer appear as white patches in the oral cavity called lichen planus which can be diagnosed by an oral surgeon. Studies have shown that tobacco and alcohol combined together increase the risk can be more disastrous to the affected patient.
Developing oral cancer can be prevented by eliminated by fighting the root cause such as pan, gutka and cigarettes. Early detection can save one's life and the signs and symptoms include burning sensation which is diagnosed in a routine dental check-up. Mouth or throat cancer can be fatal and might also include the loss of voice depending on the stage of cancer.
Tip 5 - Follow a healthy diet
Sugary food and drinks contribute to tooth decay and can be detrimental to your good oral health. Bacteria in the mouth have increased activity as added sugars in soft drinks can drop the Ph of the oral cavity contributing to their growth especially in kids, and pediatric dentists tell many parents to avoid bottle feeding milk added with sugar. Beverages such as green teas and black tea can help prevent caries as they balance the Ph of the oral cavity and are loaded with antioxidants. Calcium-containing foods such as dairy products and plain yogurt can protect the enamel thanks to their calcium content.
Good news is that some delicious citrus fruits are also effective in inhibiting the bacteria such as streptococcus mutants in the oral cavity and they are also a great source of vitamin C which in very essential in maintaining the structural integrity of the gums as it promotes collagen formation in the periodontium and can improve your overall oral health restoring your healthy teeth and gums. Leafy green Raw vegetables contain fiber and are effective in cleansing the oral cavity and the dental arches. The American dental association recommends rinsing the mouth after consuming sugary beverages and following a balanced diet.
Tip 6 - Use a mouth wash
An alcohol-free mouthwash is recommended by many dentists to avid the side effects of this ingredient. Chlorhexidine and triclosan-containing mouthwashes are recommended by many periodontists in patients facing regular plaque buildup.
A mint flavor mouthwash is clinically proven to restore a fresh breath and avoids bad breath after an oral rinse. Natural mouthwashes such as the popular oil pulling method can be made a part of your oral care regimen if you are uncomfortable with the chemicals in a traditional mouthwash. Oral health and oral hygiene maintenance can go a long way due to the deep cleansing action of a mouthwash where a toothbrush or dental floss cannot reach. An antiseptic mouthwash can be used in the case of an infection, dry mouth or gum disease. Top picks when it comes to an effective mouthwash include the crest pro health which is also effective for people with sensitive teeth. A mouth wash can be used after brushing and flossing to cleanse your teeth and gums to improve the mouth feeling and dental health.
