Imagine a game of poker where everybody has their cards on the table facing up. The strongest hand would win in every game, which would make for a very tedious game indeed. The psychological element of poker arises from the secrecy of the game, and is central to its appeal.

As you cannot see the other players cards, and they cannot see yours, a player can win by betting on a bad or mediocre hand as if it were a sure fire winner. This false show of confidence, intended to scare other players out of the game, is known as bluffing.

Learning how to bluff effectively can really improve your chances of winning at poker on a regular basis. You cannot help the hands you are dealt, and unless you are very lucky, you will not have a good hand every time. Therefore, you need to be able to win with inferior cards.

Over time, you will start to get a better idea of the type of situations where a bluff might win the game for you. However, you do not want to be too predictable with this, as the other players will be looking to spot patterns in your play in order to exploit them.

The pure bluff and the semi bluff ...
... are the two types of bluff that can be used in poker. Betting on a bad hand to scare off the other players, a strategy known as a pure bluff, is risky but can sometimes pay dividends.

A semi bluff is when you bet or raise on a hand that might have a chance of winning, especially if the right cards come up. This is slightly less risky than a pure bluff, but it can backfire just as spectacularly.

It is important to bluff at the right times. Some players merely bluff every so often to improve their chances of winning, but if you do this without paying attention to the playing patterns of the other players and picking your moments, you will probably lose a fair amount of money.

You do not have to bluff to win at poker. It can help you to win, but it can just as easily hinder you, so you should probably steer clear of it altogether until you have a bit of experience under your belt.
