South Korea's LG Electronics announced a dual-screen smartphone at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2019) on Sunday.

Customers can watch movies on one screen while browsing the Internet, as the two screens on the new V50ThinQ 5G smartphone work independently.

LG is the seventh largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. LG lost more than a quarter of its business last year as Chinese rivals Huawei Technologies and Xiaomi seized market share in a slightly weak global market.

According to research firm IHS Markit, LG Electronics shipped 45 million smartphones in 2018, compared with 56 million in 2017, director of mobile devices and networking, IHS Markit said. Samsung shipped 290 million smartphones last year, compared with 316 million in 2017. Huawei's shipments in 2018 were 206 million units, compared with 153 million units in 2017.

LG Electronics reported revenue of $54.4 billion last month and $2.4 billion in 2018. LG's mobile communications division reported revenue of $7.08 billion in 2018 and $1.51 billion in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2018.

LG did not determine the release date or announce the price of the 5G smartphone, but said the 5G model will be available in the first half of this year.

LG is partnering with 10 major carriers in the market that will launch 5G services this year, including the US, South Korea, Australia and some European countries. British mobile operator EE and US mobile service provider Sprint announced that they will launch LG's 5G smartphone.

LG's first 5G phone will support high-quality content at 5G speed and is expected to deliver up to 20 times faster than 4G.

LG's 5G devices use the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform with Snapdragon X50 5G modem and LG optimization software to provide advanced processing power. The phone is equipped with a 4,000mAh battery, which is 20% larger than the V40ThinQ.
