What Are Grit Bins?
A grit bin is an item of street furniture that is commonly found on roads all over the United Kingdom. The majority of grit bins hold a mixture of salt and grit which is used to spread on roads and paths to give a less slippery surface during icy weather. The salt encourages the snow or ice to melt and the grit can help to increase traction for vehicles or pedestrians. A shovel or spade is often used to remove the mixture from the bins and spread across the road.
The most commonly used grit bins are plastic and made from Polyethylene. This material is non-corrosive and therefore perfect for outdoor use in all types of weather. They are available with or without hoppers depending on your needs. They can be ordered in different colours making them a perfect solution for businesses who would like to carry on a corporate colour throughout their outdoor décor. Polyethylene versions generally come in two different sizes. A 200 litre version will hold 8 x 25 kilogram bags of salt whereas the 400 litre version will hold 16 x 25 kilogram bags of salt. If you require a heavier duty grit bin you could opt for one that is made ...
... from a glass fibre composite with a textured finish. These types of grit bins are a lot more strong and durable than the more common plastic versions.
The Victoriana grit bin has a more stylish appearance. Although it is made from medium duty Polyethylene it is still a heavy duty bin, able to withstand diverse weather. The Victoriana is available with or without a hopper feed and is non-corrosive. It has a beautiful finish with black and gold trim and comes in two different sizes.
Security can often become a concern when having this bin. Vandalism is common when grit bins are in areas that are openly exposed to the general public. They can be damaged or tipped over which wastes the salt and grit mixture. Even if someone was to leave the grit bins lid open, exposing it to the elements could result in rain dissolving the salt rendering the mixture ineffective. Due to these issues, these bins are available with locks if needed. This reduces vandalism therefore resulting in a cost saving as you will not need to replace damaged bins.
With weather patterns changing across the world and snow and ice becoming more common during the winter months, grit bins are sure to become a necessary item for many companies. As they are available as bespoke items they can be a very attractive addition to the outdoor area of any facility. They are available in various strengths and sizes as well as with or without locks allowing peace of mind when leaving them unattended. There are various sizes to choose from so are adaptable to any need, you could even place one or more around your facility depending on the size. These bins are now a necessity in the 21st century and a quality addition to any business.
