Some Major Differences In Work Ethics Between Korea And The West
Working with Koreans is an altogether different experience as compared to what you may be used to when you work with western countries. Hence, it is essential to understand and be wary of such differences. A lack of understanding of these differences may only lead to misunderstanding and disagreement with your clients.
Individual vs group mentality
In most western countries, there is a lot of focus given to individuals in the organisation. His personal skills and contribution are given a lot of importance, however in Korea, what matters is the contribution of entire team. Individual contribution is given recognition as long as it leads to the success of team. Group mentality is predominant in Korean society and you will find the same in their language, culture and food habits. You will often find them using words like we and us instead of me.
Personal vs professional life
Work life balance is given utmost importance in western part of the world. Family time is given equal importance and professional and personal life is kept separate. In Korea however, work is given more priority. After work drinking ...
... parties are a common scenario in Korea and personal and professional life are one and the same. According to them, it is an important part of team building.
Age Hierarchy And Work Productivity
Society in Korea is based on age hierarchy. More respect is given to older people and they pretty much get away with anything. The same concept is true when it comes to work environment too. Age is given more importance than skill. While it is still changing, there is still a long way to go. If you are young in age, you are considered lowest in hierarchy too. This hinders productivity and makes decision making harder. In western countries however, skills and experience are more important that age.
Concept of time is money
Prevailing belief in western culture is that every individual cant work hard and succeed. Hence, time is an important aspect and considered to be a tangible asset. People here expect to be paid for the time they spend at work. Korean culture has no such beliefs. People in Korea are expected to work overtime without getting paid. Most people in Korea take it as a norm and hence do not complain.
Communication style
Communication in western countries is very direct and silent moments are considered uncomfortable. Koreans on the other hand are very indirect. They value culture and indirect communication. Working and personal relationships are built on personal bonds. This is why saving face is important and conflict is handled indirectly. It is important to read between the lines and comprehend body language.
While these differences may seem class apart, they are also the reason why working with Koreans can be exciting and unique. So, if you are making a business travel booking to Korea, it is suggested that you be open minded and tolerant in order to enjoy the dissimilarities.
