Companies embracing the new wave of leadership development in 2019 are helping talent across the board; spanning CEOs and high performers to new talent of various backgrounds, understand the importance of rethinking old attitudes and learning new skills. At the House of Balance, we believe that the corporate leaders of the future are molded for the future through fresh, innovative approaches to leadership development and coaching - and not holding back in making these programs accessible to the best people.

In this article, we examine how the best leadership coaching programs work and point out the new reasons why businesses must make leadership development programs available to people who show leadership potential and drive, regardless of whether they fit into conventional ideas of what leaders “should look like.”

How new leadership coaching programs should work
Coaching programs will start off by identifying skill gaps and leadership blind spots, as well as their organizational goals and objectives. Top-level coaches will quickly work on cultivating or growing key characteristics for personal and ...
... professional development like honesty, transparency, fairness and great communication, and today’s leadership coaches are now well-equipped with the tools and techniques to achieve the intended results.

The most successful coaching and development programs are the ones that help leaders make the greatest positive difference in their leadership. As the modern business environment evolves, so too does the necessity to elevate leadership capabilities. The growth of the coaches is the key measurement of success of any coaching initiative, so coaches must also take significant responsibility for their engagement and involvement in the program.

“People don’t care how much you know, they want to know how much you care”

Development of Leaders in the Digital Age

The digital age has transformed the core and function of corporate leadership. Organizations have had to embrace the concept of learning new technologies in the digital workplace and how it affects industries of different shape and size whether you offer a product, service or solution. However, it's not all about algorithms. There is still a critical human element to leadership that will evolve within the burgeoning digital workforce.

As a result, leadership development programs must evolve to stay abreast of these rapid-fire changes as well. We must stay focused on desired outcomes and not “toss out” our current training programs, but rather encourage leaders to understand that training and coaching are key to developing future CEOs, high performers and new talent - and always will be.

Cultural change

In the past, a "command-and-control" approach was central to developing leaders. However, the more digital-focused workforce of today follows the precedent of leadership established by the likes of Google and Apple - which is built on influence. Consequently, businesses in every industry need to develop new leadership performance measures tailored to work environments that are more collaborative, experimental, and risk-tolerant, which are increasingly becoming the rule rather than the exception.

Leadership coaching programs must take into account that younger CEOs and top-performing leaders of today don’t know a time before the advent of the internet and people of all ages are now far more willing to share masses of personal data every day through their online interactions and social media participation.

Authenticity: the new corporate buzzword

Every organisation that wants to be successful needs their CEOs and high performing leaders to use and build upon their authenticity when utilising a leadership coaching program. This all-encompassing term includes virtues of integrity, willingness to admit mistakes, receptivity to feedback, and true humility.

It’s important to highlight the difference between having a strong ego (being characterized by drive, confidence and action orientation while remaining humble) and a big ego (“It’s all about me!”, taking credit instead of giving it, having narcissistic tendencies, defaulting to using the term “I” instead of “we”).

The best CEOs, leaders and high performers are constantly learning. They draw on their curiosity and their great networking skills to acquire knowledge and insights on a wide range of topics not just within their own industry.
They love the coaching journey and participate in the process to the best of their abilities, and become more authentic in their leadership as a result.

Leadership is changing, and it’s changing fast. Organizations need dynamic, authentic people to steer the ship into the future to remain creative, innovative and competitive. Don’t leave your most valuable players behind. Invest in their growth and development as leaders so they can create the change you want to see.

Top performers in any organization who understand the nuances of self-awareness, self-confidence, and emotional intelligence will always outperform the rest of the pack, and they have the greatest potential to climb the ladder towards becoming high-flying leaders and captains of industry. Elite organizations know that purpose-driven people release greater energy, vitality, and creativity – not only within themselves but also within the teams they lead.

The key challenge faced by corporate executives, CEOs and senior management is to clarify and align their corporate purpose with their personal one in a powerful and unique way. Although today’s business environment requires executive leaders to become more self-aware and in touch with their personal values and purpose, they are unable to do so with the rise in workloads and the higher expectations placed on them to deliver.
