The legend behind the famous Muktinath Temple
The legendary muktinath yatra is regarded as complete only with the visit to the ancient Muktinath temple that is located in the mesmerizing Muktinath valley, in the district of Mustang, Nepal. According to the popular belief, the Muktinath temple is a must visit for any individual ...
... who has completed the popular chardham yatra that covers four different pilgrimage sites in India. Held as sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists, the Muktinath temple is completed by a Buddhist monastery as well as a Vishnu mandir.
Hindus call the place ‘Muktikshetra’ or the place where one gets salvation. The temple is regarded as one among the four religious sites and one among the 51 Sakti peetams. It is also popularly called ‘Salagrama’ in the religion and the Shaligrams that are found in the temple are regarded as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and are worshipped by the Hindus.
Buddhists call this valley ‘Chumig Gyatsa’ which literally translates to ‘hundred waters’ in the Tibetan language. The Tibetan Buddhists regard the Muktinath Temple as an important place for the Dakinis or the sky dancers. Chuming Gyatsa is also regarded as one of the 24 tantric places.
The people of south India call the place ‘Muktidham’, or a holy pilgrimage that can get you salvation. South Indians regard it important to visit the temple once in their entire lifetime.
Inside the Muktinath Temple
The most beautiful thing about the Muktinath Temple is that it is not a shrine alone but a number of small attractions that complete this temple. Even though the pagoda style temple is small in size, it holds a life size statue of Lord Vishnu in gold. There are other statues of goddess Laxmi, Saraswati, Janaki (Sita), the sons of Lord Ram, Lava-Kush, Lord Garuda and the Sapta Rishis.
Just behind the temple, there are 108 water faucets shaped like a bull head. The ice cold water from the Gandaki River has been directed to flow out of these faucets. According to a popular belief, bathing under these can get one liberation and salvation. Most of the pilgrims visiting the temple make it a point to bathe under these faucets. These water spouts are called ‘Muktidhara’.
Just in front of the temple, there are two holy ponds called the Saraswati and the Laxmi Kunda. Taking a holy dip in these is also believed to get liberation.
Just at the entrance of the main temple, there is a Buddhist monastery named Mharme Lha Khang Gomba. It is dedicated to Guru Rimpoche. The monastery is visited by both Hindus and Buddhists with the same reverence.
To the south of the muktinath temple is the famous ‘Jwalamai Temple’ that is a more a miracle in itself. The temple has two holy flames that are fed by natural gas and are burning continuously.
