There is always debate over the topics of Dubbing and Subtitling. Why so? Because both these concepts are pretty much similar and have benefits and disadvantages in their own way.

Suppose you want to communicate to some other country which is not familiar with your language through a video of your company. What do you do then? The two things that strike in our mind is Dubbing or Subtitling the video. Now, the choice between the two options is rather difficult. One may prefer Subtitling over Dubbing because Dubbing is an expensive process than Subtitling but some may prefer Dubbing if the video is for small children. The decision should be made keeping in mind the information processing, type of video, costs, sound and plenty of other factors.

If I am the one recommending someone if would go for Subtitling over Dubbing. Let us compare and see why Subtitling is the better choice.

It is the option that is preferred by most of the people because it is more economical. But here are some more points that are to be kept in mind while opting for Subtitling-

It is a much cheaper process than Dubbing. Dubbing can cost you thrice the amount you spend on Subtitling.

The original audio of the video still remains and does not change maintaining the voices of artists consistent.

The audience which does not have the ability to read at a persistent speed like infants or visually impaired people or illiterate people would have no use of the subtitles in the video.

Subtitles attract the attention of the viewers; a film with no audio can still be watched with the help of subtitles.
Videos consisting of charts or graphs and subtitles at the same time would make it difficult for the viewers to concentrate and understand both at the same time.

Subtitling lets you keep the video natural that is it does not interfere with the correct language the actor or artist is speaking.
Many technical videos like giving instructions cannot be subtitled as it would make it difficult for a viewer to understand and harder to interpret it at the same time.

Now, let us talk about the other concept of Dubbing.

Dubbing

Dubbing is mainly the process used in filmmaking and video production in which additional or supplementary recording is mixed with the original to make the final audio. People who dub the voice in a film are known as Dubbing artists in Dubbing studio in India

Here are some points that are to be kept in mind while choosing Dubbing for a video-

Dubbing is a much more expensive process than Subtitling as dubbing artists cost you a huge amount of fee and the whole process of adding someone's voice in the video costs a lot more than you think.
Dubbing cannot be done if you don’t have a specialized dubbing artist for the language you want to dub the video.

If there are too many roles in the video than different artists for different roles have to be hired.

Any video or film which already has background music running may be needed to recreate or provide a separate track for the video which can cost you more.

Unlike Subtitling there are no disturbing words on the screen for the viewers in Dubbing.

Not only Dubbing and Subtitling are the options but options like Voice-over or Hybrid can also be considered.

Voice-over is a similar process as Dubbing but it is more economical than Dubbing. It involves just the use of three dubbing artists for the whole video that is one narrator, one man, and one woman. Where in the same man is used for all men characters and the same woman is used for all the women characters in the video. This is a comparatively cheaper than Dubbing as the personnel requirement is less. But the finished output looks and feels cheap as it is basically translation over the lowered volume of the video.

On the other hand, Hybrid is the process in which the narrator and the main characters are just dubbed and all the extras in the video are subtitled. It is the combination of both Dubbing and Subtitling.
When you know all your options then you should take a look at your own resources before engaging in one of the options.

Firstly, you should see what kind of content you are representing in the video and according to that, an option must be selected. If it is a children's video then Dubbing is the way to go, but as in the case of a documentary, an economical option like Hybrid should be selected.

Another thing that must be decided is how you publish your video. Options like DVD usually have options for both voice-over and subtitles whereas many video sharing platforms provide with just cheap translation.
What you want is to target as much audience as you can, so your business can proper more. You need to see what is in trend and what businesses prefer in the videos. You need to know what would give a better understanding of your specific video, Dubbing, Subtitling or any other option.

After considering all these points one must decide what is the best option for them as Subtitling can be economical than Dubbing but there are cases where it cannot be used. One must take an informed decision on which option you want to go on with.
