Academic writing is a formal and impersonal form of writing. Unlike informal writing, academic writing involves the adherence to specific rules of writing. For instance, academic writing involves the adherence to academic writing styles. Students are required to adhere to academic styles such as APA, MLA, and AMA depending on the instructions provided by the instructor (Giltrow, & Burgoyne, 2009). The writing style selected will direct the student on the structure of the academic paper as well as the citation of the paper. Academic writing is, therefore, non-random. It is specific and aims to attain a specific objective. Students thus cover numerous academic writings including term paper, research, and thesis. Academic writing strives to cover specific objectives that relate to the course that the student is undertaking.
Personally, I have engaged in numerous academic writing as I pursued my previous course. I can confidently say that I am better at academic writing than before. Initially, I struggled with prose writing. I would write short, disjointed sentences that would sometimes hamper the flow of ...
... ideas. I also experienced problem introducing and concluding an academic writing. Academic writings must have an introduction, a body or discussion segment as well as a conclusion that sums up the paper. I also experienced problems with verbosity, and in some instances, I was advised by my instructors not to be too wordy.
My strength is that I engage in extensive research and analysis before writing any academic assignment. I always strive to gather adequate information and thus seek supporting information beyond what has been provided. For instance, when handling an assignment, I strive to research more information beyond the notes provided by the instructor. My extensive research skills enable me to write an academic paper that is comprehensive and well thought out. I also engage in the extensive proofreading of my work thus ensuring that I present a paper that is free of any errors.
I still have difficulties starting a fresh piece of writing. For instance, when faced with a new topic, I experience some degree of mental block where I struggle determining how to start the topic. However, I have managed to manage the problem through planning (Giltrow, & Burgoyne, 2009). Planning enables me to organize my thoughts about the topic hence determine how to start the paper. I also have a tendency to procrastinate to the last minute. Unfortunately, last minute writing result to a poorly written paper that leads to low results.
