Dental Sutures
Dental ...
... sutures are used to close a wound. Leaving the tooth extracted site without closing leads to blood loss, infection, and post-surgery complications. After the wisdom teeth removal, the stitches are made on the soft tissues to stabilise it in a place to stimulate healing, as they are loosen-up during the procedure.
Types of Stitches
There are two types of sutures deployed by the dentists for oral surgeries or extraction procedures. They are as follows,
- Dissolvable Stitches Or Catgut
Dissolvable stitches don’t need to be removed after the healing process. These stitches dissolve in your mouth once the healing phase is completed. They break-down naturally. Dissolvable sutures are either made of sheep’s intestine or synthetic compounds like polyglycolic acid, glycolic and lactic acid copolymer, glycolide and epsilon-caprolactone copolymer, and polydioxanone. The time duration of disintegration depends on the type of material. It takes about 12 days for an organic gut to break-down while it requires a month for the synthetic gut.
- Non-Dissolvable Stitches
Non-dissolvable stitches are made of materials that don’t degrade. These stitches have to be removed manually once the completed healing is attained. Materials like silk, polyester, polyvinylidene fluoride, polypropylene, and nylon are used to make the non-absorbable sutures. The durability of each material varies. Silk retains 20% of its original strength for 6 months, nylon loses 20% of its strength each year, and polypropylene lasts longer than any other materials. As these sutures are highly durable, they have to be removed after the healing phase. Generally, it is detached 7 to 10 days after the stitches are made. The non-absorbable sutures are removed by your dentist that doesn’t create any pain.
Benefits of Dental Sutures
- Shortens the distance between the incisions that are made during the procedure.
- Protects the underlying bone and prevents foreign materials from invading the wound site.
- Strengthens the wound.
- Controls bleeding.
Thus the recovery process goes smoothly with the help of dental sutures.
